Lung Damage?

In the beginning of October I noticed I was coughing a bit, went on a trip to ASU for halloween weekend. During that weekend, I start to get these horrible cough attacks. If I started to laugh I would have an attack, if I woke up from sleeping I would have an attack. If I had one after eating I would actually throw up most of my meal. To this day I have not been 100% and can't even function at the gym because of this. If it's really cold outside I get them very easily to this day.

Having coughed so much since then I fear that my lungs are permanently damaged. I have gained a decent deal of weight and this is truly affected my life. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!

Might just be asthma

Sometimes this comes on as an adult and is very manageable. Check with your doctor right away, but the news might not be as bad as you fear.

I had similar conditions last year. Went to see my doc. X-rays came out clean. He told to take zyretc and a nasal spray (fluticasone propionate), which took care of the cough. Bottom line, go see a doc.

I do not smoke, just dip.
Even the extra strength codeine cough with morphine didn't do much.

I'm having a similar problem as the OP and it has been a few months already. Went to the doctor too and the x-ray is clear. My doctor said he seems to think it's environmental, meaning something around me is making me cough. I need to go to a specialist because he can't really help me other than giving me that x-ray.

Could be a ton of things. Go see a doctor. Codeine wouldn't help anyways.

I had this same shit for like 4 months last year.

I went to two urgent care facilities (one in Lake Tahoe and one in LA) who both told me there was nothing wrong with me, even though I was coughing shit up and couldn't breath.

I literally went to the ER (twice) because of it. The first time I was having uncontrollable coughing fits and wanted something to just make it stop. The second time (the following week) I felt like I was dying every time I coughed. As it turns out I had actually fractured a rib (that was some scary pain) from coughing so hard. Side note: If you want to get in to see a Doc right away at the ER just mumble that you have some mild chest pain. They will straight-up descend on you like locusts.

In all instances the X-Rays were always clear, etc. Everyone just stared at be blankly when I told them that I was in pain and couldn't breath, etc... like they didn't believe me.

After 4 months of the run around, I ended up finally seeing a pulmonary specialist at UCLA who diagnosed me with chronic bronchitis and adult onset asthma. She said that most likely my chronic coughing was probably the reason for my asthma, which was awesome considering she was at least the 5th person I'd seen for the issue at that point.

All I'm saying is that there is no substitution for a specialist. So you should definitely go get checked out before you do more damage than you already have.

I went on Advair for about 2 months which did work and allowed me to heal up, etc. (made me gain like 15lbs though) and now I have a maintenance Albuterol inhaler that it need maybe once a week at night before bed, etc. Sucks, but it is what it is..
