3 Liter NA Engine for 2012 ?

I know this subject has been discussed at length but I ran across this on the BMW UK website. www.bmw.co.uk The new 5 series will have a 258 HP variety of the 272 HP N53 engine with High precision direct injectioin. The engine does not have valvetronic so we know it is the engine that run in the lean burn stratified charge mode. The intersesting thing is that it does not get quite as good as gas milage as the 272 HP version. It does however offer a 3 mpg improvement on the highway over the 328.
If I were betting man, this probalbly be the engine we will get. Not to close to the 335 horspower and still enough improvment over the 328.

Yes, that is the engine we'll hopefully get in the F30. But I wonder if the 328i engine might be upgraded for the 2011 model year.

The F10 is now heavier by 350lbs compared to the E90 330i. That's a lot.

The wheebase is 8 3/16" longer. Also 1 3/4" wider. Quite a large car!!!

Damn! I was hoping the F30 would be either lighter than the E90 or at least not much be heavier. Cars are getting bloated more and more.

Hmmm, I was expecting a turbo 4, the 328, 335 and M3, which may get a smaller, FI engine. I, for one, welcome a wider range of smaller, FI engines, especially any 4-cyl diesels.

The new engine for the 528i in Europe does indeed have Valvetronic AND Direct Injection. But the version we will get here will not have D.I....240hp, a small bump I believe.

One of our BMW insiders has already mentioned that the U.S. will not receive any normally aspirated Direct Injection engines until the gas/sulphur situation changes, if ever....

I've also heard rumors about the death of the NA inline 6 in the US by the time F30 rolls around.

RichReg:
The BMW engines with Direct Injection do not have valvetronic. The injector located in the center of the cylinder does not allow room for the valvetronic hardware, motor etc. It does have double Vanos however. With regards to the suphur content, yes this is the reason why we havd not gotton these engines thus far, but the Euro 6 standard and our new EPA sulpur standards will be almost indentical buy the time this car hits our shores.

I stand corrected.

Not sure I fully understand why the 330i & 325i in Europe can have both Valvetronic & D.I., but now this new engine doesn't? There's obviously enough room for both in the cylinders of those engines.

That sounds like very weird reasoning....

I also stand as being corrected. I noticed that on the US web site for the new 5 series, thay are talking about, for the first time they have incorperated DI with the 335 turbo, so they now must have the ability to do both. The NA DI engines could actually be brought here now but they would not be able to run in the lean burn mode, and subsequently not take full advantage of the fuel economy benefits. In lean burn mode the exhaust tempertures are much higher and they must use low sulphur fuel.

Rav;
Yes, they have incorporated D.I. and Valvetronic with the new 535 engine, both here in the U.S. AND in Europe. But it was only in Europe & abroad that the normally aspirated motors ALSO had both.

I guess I assumed that it was a natural progression for BMW to continue forward with both technologies, as it appeared that the U.S. was the only exception to the rule. But I guess there must be other reasons.
