E90 Ipod Interface

Hey guys, does anyone know if there is more being done to completely interface the Ipod into the E90. I bought my 323 in July 2006 and use the simple ipod audio/charger cable which plugs into the centre console. I was hoping to get something I could select albums and songs with my I-drive.

There is a new ipod interface that just came out the past few months that you can get through your dealer - you shouldnt pay more than about $450 US ...from what I have read on these posts and from what I paid. Its about $350 US + install. makes it so the ipod works with the idrive knob as a 'cd changer' basically. I love mine!!!!

Hey Shieldsup,

I purchased a 323i a couple of weeks ago, and have been exchanging emails with Brisbane BMW about this iPod adapter.

They had a meeting in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago relating to the release of this product and it is now available for the E90..and in particular the 323i.

I have been quoted $650 from Brisbane BMW

Cheers,

Kev

I am glad I found this thread, I have been on the other iPod one - $650 is what I was quoted and was feeling pretty ripped off, now I see it is just the standard pricing... still sucks though

Got my interface installed, and I have to say I am hot and cold with it.

Firstly, with business navi it only loads up to 500 songs per playlist/atrist/genre etc. This is woeful given my 9000 song collection. It also takes a long time to load the list onto the screen, song navigation isn't as intuitive as I would like, and the software still seems a little buggy.

But on the plus side, it is easier to use in traffic, sounds good and you have the benefit of seeing the song info on the screen.

Summary - Think of it as version 0.8, it still has a long way to go to be truly good, esp in regard to song navigation, how intelligently it loads song info (should do it on the fly rather than store it in memory), probably not worth the $650 it cost, but could be in the future when they enhance the user interface in future.

they probably made it crap, so that when the new version comes out, you will want to spend more money with them to buy that one!

Here is a dealer response and the HUGE price for a 335i interface.
Yes it is possible to upgrade your 335i to the iPod interface. To have the iPod interface installed including parts, 1 hour installation plus 1 ½ reprogramming will cost A$926.35. We would require your 335i for most of the day.

The iPod interface allows the Apple iPod, iPod nano, iPod mini and iPod Photo to be connected to the car’s onboard radio system.

An iPod can store up to 1000 standard music CDs and the music stored on the iPod can be played on the cars audio system.

The interface also allows the iPod to be charged at the same time.

By selecting genres, artists, albums or play lists, it is possible to access your entire music collection at any time. Depending on the equipment in the car, operation is via either the iDrive controller, the multi-function steering wheel or directly on the radio and all play lists, tracks or artists are displayed on the on-board monitor or the radio display. The added benefit of this new system is that the customer no longer needs to create five different play lists to enjoy their iPod. This new interface will display the contents of the iPod as it appears on the display.

The iPod interface supports the following functions

- Playback of all tracks stored in the iPod

- Operation of the iPod interface via iDrive controller, multi-function steering wheel or radio

- Track search by artist, album, play list or genre using the on-board monitor or radio display

- Pod cast playback

- SC/SCAN: Play the tracks in the current list for 10 seconds each

- RND/RANDOM: Random playback of all tracks stored in the iPod

- RPT/REPEAT: Repeat the current track

- Track jump: Jump to the next or previous track

- Fast forward

- Display of detailed information about the current track (artist and time index)

- Charging of the iPod battery

Slightly off topic but depending on the car you have and whether you must integrate your ipod with it, I'd say not to bother.

The newer 6 CD stackers support MP3s so I have 6 MP3 CDs loaded in mine = 4Gb of songs and they all work fine through the head unit - make sure you use ID tags in V1.1 so you can view the song/album names in the head unit.

I have to say that personally I think BMW aftermarket options are a rip off. The adaptors for Ipods and phones are ludicrously priced. Spending the best part of $1k on an ipod and interface for a car is madness when you consider I can get better sound quality and identical functionality for less than $6 :-)

If you don't have a stacker though, then I guess you aren't left with much choice :-(
