128i RealOEM Engine Choices

Hey there guys,

I searched it briefly on the forums, but couldn't find information about this.

When I select my car at realoem website, there are 2 engine choices..

N51: 01/2009 E82 128i Coupe N51 USA Left hand drive Production Code: UP93
N52N: 01/2009 E82 128i Coupe N52N USA Left hand drive Production Code: UP73

What is the reason for this? What are the differences, anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks.

Edit: Well Looks like N51 is SULEV engine, compared to N52.. So question is, which one performs better?

SULEV is for California, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Oregon, and Washington.

My '09 128i is a SULEV with the N51 engine.

The SULEV emissions measures include:
• Secondary Air System with mini-HFM
• Radiator with “Prem-air” coating
• Lower compression ratio (10:1) via modified combustion chamber and pistons
• Underbody catalyst in addition to “near engine” catalyst
• Activated carbon air filter in air filter housing
• Plastic valve cover with integrated crankcase vent valve and separator (from N52KP)
• Steel fuel lines with threaded fittings and sealed fuel tank
• Crankcase ventilation system integrated into cylinder head cover
• Purge system piping made from optimized plastic

"Steel fuel lines with threaded fittings and sealed fuel tank" this is a very interesting difference... as it is really not an engine change...

There is a sticker near the radiator that says that it must be replaced with one with the Prem-air coating. The coating turns ozone into oxygen.
There is a BASF paper here that describes it.

It has the same 230 HP rating, but I am not convinced because of this difference: "Lower compression ratio (10:1) via modified combustion chamber and pistons".

I'm in California and I have the N52 engine. My VIN has the UP73 in it.

I also tried this website. I don't know how accurate it is though.

the car may have been diverted from a dealer in a non SULV state to his CA dealer...

I would not prefer a SULEV car given the extra/different emission parts used. I recall reading Mike Miller indicating that the SULEV e46s were more problematic.

It was new, I ordered it.

This is from a couple of years ago, but it discusses the different engines. Looks like there are 2 different types of N52 engines.

I'm in Rhode Island and the same thing happened to me. After ordering my car I discovered these two engine types and assumed I'd get the N51. But my VIN has UP73 in it.

There can't be much difference. I'm sure it takes a dyno to tell the engines apart.

and I bet they have about as much variance as two N52 motors would have.

negligable.

The N51 has the 3 stage intake manifold to compensate for that. So who knows, it may even put out slightly more than the N52... only BMW can tell.
