I live in hilly area and some of the stations were not clear even on a sunny day, it's the same problem with my E46.

Just curious if you guys who have bad reception have window tint? My understanding is that the back window holds the antenna for the radio and if you installed metalized tint the reception can be affected.

Connector Problem?

My FM and AM reception is good on my 325xi.

I did have a problem with a previous car (Pontiac Vibe) having very poor FM and AM reception. I had the Pontiac dealer troubleshoot the problem. It turned out the antenna connector in the "A' pillar was not completely mated.

This may be the problem. Suggest taking to your dealer.

I have an E92 and also have fairly poor reception compared to my previous car (w/ aftermarket radio). If anyone has any suggestions, I'm willing to try.

My E90 has great reception on FM and AM - now, the Sirius side ain't that great... but broadcast is fine. Second the notion that perhaps your car should be looked at if you're having reception problems.

No problems with AM or FM reception here, either. I have tint, but it is non-metallic.

I've found the FM reception to be particularly receptive. The only problem is there's too many commercials . No tints on my car.

I have great reception and have a ceramic tint... if you have a metallic tint that may be the issue.

I get pretty good FM reception except my radio steps at 200 KHz on the odd tenth (97.1, 97.3, 97.5, etc.) and my local radio station is at 97.2 MHz. Anyone know a way to alter the frequency step?

SoYank - your radio is set to US/Canada. Assuming you're overseas someplace?

There is a way to set the radio to the location you are in - it was (inadvertantly) done on my car at the dealership.

I'm pretty sure the FM antenna is actually embedded in the rear windshield and not in the sharkfin.

The AM/FM antenna is actually in the roof, at the top of the rear window (there's a little plastic cover over it at the back of the headliner.) Its got several antennas which it selectively chooses between (I think they call it "diversity") - and supposedly an amplifier. It also houses the TV antenna for those lucky countries which are equipped. As cool as it sounds, I don't think it works all that great either.

The sharkfin (depending on how the car is equipped) houses the two antennas for satellite radio (one for satellite/one for terrestrial),an antenna for the built-in telematics/cellular (TCU/BMW assist), an antenna for the GPS/Navigation, and a mobile phone antenna for the optional cradle.
