BUZZing sound with engine off

I parked our 07 X3 in the garage last night and returned in a couple minutes to retrieve a package from the car. I heard a faint buzzing sound. Walking around the garage - I deterimed it was coming from the car. It seemed louder at the rear. I turned the key on and back off (without starting the engine) and the sound was no longer there. What was I hearing? Could it have been the fuel pump? Is this dangerous? Has anyone else observed this?

My current '08 X3 and former e90 330i both make the same sound on occasion. I assume that it is the fuel pump doing something it is preprogrammed to do. It did freak me out the first few times I heard it.

I'm sorry I don't have a definitive answer of the source of the sound, but you are not the only one experiencing it.

Thanks for the information. I feel better knowing that it is not something isoloated to our car. If I hear it again - I will monitor it and see how long it lasts, etc...

Totally normal.....

It's the leak test pump.
