Peake Reset tool vs. BT Scan Tool

Anyone know the differences other than $140? All I need is something to read the factory codes and reset them if necessary.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Peake has been around in the BMW community forever, quite frankly, much longer than BT. I am just trying to figure out how/why the BT is double the price.

Because it is the only tool available to the public that reads the extended BMW codes, like the tuner detection codes. All others are just basic OBDII scanners.

Anyone use the Autoenginuity one? I have the BT tool (and PROcede), but some friends are thinking of getting the Autoenginuity tool for their E46 M3's.

Mike-

With all due respect, I don't think your statement is completely accurate. The Peake (http://www.peakeresearch.com/fcx3.htm) or Autoenginuity (http://www.autoenginuity.com/product...ware.html#EI07) are specifically designed to read BMW codes, NOT just OBDII codes.

Admittedly, the Autoenginuity product is close to the BT in price. I am also not convinced that the Peake product will read everything the BT or Autoenginuity products will, but I can't tell for sure what the differences are.

The AE may also function with the BMW extended package if it is available. It's more expensive than the BT though and I'm not sure if its fully compatible.

Using Peak's site I wasn't able to find a model they suggest is compatible, and until you test it against a BT to see if it can clear hidden codes, etc, it's a risk. If they have a return policy give it a test and report back. A few months ago you would have needed to spend $3k on a fake GT1 system to clear these codes so $287 VIA a BT is quite a bargain.

They mention compatibility with "most" bmws up to 2007. Since the E90/E92 has not changed from 2007 to 2008 why would the tool not be compatible with 2008+?

Actually isnt that the period in which BMW migrated from the MSD80 to MSD81?

Yes, but some 08s got MSD80. The switch to MSD81 happened halfway thru

So, it's unclear if that's what they mean.

I am leaning toward peake, can't justify almost double the price. Especially when I found this http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=360706 to easliy reset CBS (oil, plugs, etc.)

Mega Bump!

Just bought the Peake R5-FCX product:
http://www.peakeresearch.com/fcx3.htm

Quick review: I got it from www.eurosportdesign.com/. $139 shipped via 2 day. Excellent product! I was looking for an alternative to the BT scan tool, which was rather expensive. I didn't want a used one either, which would have restricted me to just two Vins. My car is an '07, so luckily It can be scanned using the peake product. Yesterday I did a quick scan and found 4 codes. 1 HPFP, 2 Vanos solenoid, and 1 oil analyzer. The product can real and clear ALL BMW codes, is portable, compact, and does not require a PC. It also isn't restricting me on Vins. IMHO, its a perfect alternative to the BT product. Only downside is if you have an 08-2011 Bimmer.

Thanks for the update Turkey!!!! I am leaning toward peake too. I wish it could reset/register the battery.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger
