Lightbulb The Ultimate Bavarian19 Euro Xenons Install Thread

...continuing on from bavarian19's accident drama thread. Sorry fo the slight delay in getting these pics up.

As mentioned; bavarian19 (AJ), thd13 (Truong), KL2DC (Donny) met up Saturday morning (yesterday) at FrankoQ's (Frank) place to install the spiffy euro headlights on the bavarian19-mobile.

We all lent a hand in varying degrees of involvement towards making the install a successfula nd efficient one. I was actually, rather suprised at how easy the swap was, truly a simple case of plug and play. The bumper removal was as per the DIY found on e90post. The fender liner removal is a familiar one, as per PMB install. Other than that, it was just swapping out the headlight mount bracket onto the new euro lights and plugging all connectors in.

All in all, it must've taken about an hour to do the install and that included a bout of OCDness by Mr. OCD himself . Proper alignment of the headlights in relation to the fender and bumper probably took as much time as removing the bumper cover and plugging in the headlights. But it was worth it. We wanted the install to be BMW grade and not GM grade

Thank you Frank for hosting this install. Your generosity and technical expertise are much appreciated

My gears are already running on thinking up of more ambitious projects to tackle

Anyways, here are some pics of the install....

AJ, you really need to wash/detail your car (externally and internally)

When I saw it, I was taken back that it wasn't maintained to your usual and exemplary high standards Especially behind the front bumpers and within the engine bay...

Anyways, congratulations once again! The lights look awesome and they look great on your car. Everything is just coming together. Well Done!!

Truong, it was great meeting you.

Well...after thd13 and bavarian19 left (at about 12:30)...

FrankoQ and I went cracking at a couple of small mods...

1st up, the rear power outlets retrofit. Once again, thanks JD @ Crown auto parts for getting us this euro part. It sure is $14 well spent

Also thanks Frank for helping with the install. Couldn't have done it without your help in trim removal and electrical wiring.

Basically, the rear panel snaps off, disconnect some wires, cut some wires, splice some wires via quick connects, install ashtray and AC vents on new panel piece and put everything back together again.

Some pics...

2nd project up was the sunglass tray...

We've not seen this install on a steptronic-equipped car but I maintained the only difference was a couple of wires/plugs that needed disconnecting.

Basic process: 1) remove step knob 2) remove step boot 3) lift up center trim piece 4) unplug step wires (2, color coded) 5) remove ashtray assembly 6) remove ashtray cover trim piece 7) reassemble sunglass tray onto center trim piece 8) reverse to finish install...

HOWEVER, we did run into a major and time-consuming problem. The DIY on the post wasn't clear when it came to the ashtray cover trim piece and we mistakenly attacked the trim rather than removing the whole piece off. So sometime were spent gluing the trim back together. It wasn't pretty, let's just say, Frank's dremel kit came out for action As you can see in the final pic, some finishing on the cover's edge is still required, will work on that in the days to come.

Once again...thanks Frank for all your help. I ended up leaving at 15:30 or 2 hours after AJ and Truong left

Nice pics Donny.
I had already planned to spend the afternoon working with you guys.
Thanks for letting me borrow the cigarrete lighter tray.
My next mod is to install the sun glasses tray but keeping the amber light
inside the tray.

I'm also doing the rear outlets. I wanted to use the cigarrete lighter power
source to feed the rear plugs. But that requires running wires from the
front of the center console to the rear.
After looking at Donny's console "guts" I realize that running the wires
will require removal of the entire center console. I think.

I did not want to tap into the center console outlet power source.
will it overload? I don't know. worse case? A fuse will blow.
Anyone has an idea about this?

Lastly, someone left a nice watch in my garage.
Either forgotten or a very nice tip!!!

Frank, looking forward to seeing your sunglass tray install with amber light retrofit. Sounds great when you spelled it out yersterday.

Also, revisit the center console, I am thinking a thin wire (wire hanger unfolded) should help you thread the cable from the front, right on to the rear, I do concur its a tight squeeze. Good luck...

If you need help with the install...I still owe you one ( or two )

Andrew...have you checked out Bimmian's bumper plugs. They're pretty good value at $17 per pair.

Again, much thanks to Donny, Truong, and Frank for the help with the install!!! Many hands did make for lighter work!!!

I still have to adjust the height of the xenons. They were a little higher than where they should be, and ill adjust them so they are at an appropriate level.

The bulbs in them are clear bulbs, but obviously when they are on, they are the OEM amber color. Other than the fact that my car is really dirty now (even though the pics dont really show it), it gives a much cleaner look with the chrome and silver bits in the front.

Two more mods left for me (rear outlets and split center console). Then I am on official mod hiatus...
