128i Intake 2 fitlers?

Anyone take a look inside the stock air box on the 128i? I had a look around yesterday and noticed that after the air filter there is another filter just before the charge pipe. It looks like a HEPA filter or something. It seems very restrictive.

Question: why is it there?

If I understand you correctly, the second filter is the carbon filter used to keep out the
pollutants. It has been discussed on here a couple of times. A lot of people have cut it out and sanded down the material and just left the other filter (usually the drop in filter). So I hope this helps.

Jay is correct it is a charcoal filter it reduces the amount of pollutants that come out of the engine when it is turned off. Euro models do not have this so you can either remove it or just install a injen intake or afe.
