Needforspeed Shift

Just been playing the PC version of this game. It's quite simply superb.

Needforspeed gameplay meets GTR2 realistic simulation.

Game opens with a trial race at Brands Hatch in an e92 m3. I won and have just bought my first car - a 135i coupe.

Check out the incredible cockpit model detailing:

Like all NFS games, and Sim 'Lite' Games (CM DiRT2, GRID etc) it has visible damage but more or less no detriment to performance.

I quite like the balance of Shift between a realistic 'appearance' and the obviously more accessible handling. DiRT 2 on the other hand, is extremely brash and professional feeling, but it fails to convey the feeling that your part of anything other than a gang of wandering rich kids, who buy land in third world countries and ar$e about on it (Like Bam Margera, with cars for example) but both games are quite good.

Neither will touch GT or Forza for realism or a proper racing experience, but both deserve praise for being pick up and play, and quite a lot of fun.

Once I have written my official reviews and got the site up and running, I will speak to Viv and Tony about whether or not I can link to the reviews (In the context of related threads only)

^^^ Damage in Dirt 2 definitely has an affect on perfomance.

Yes and no - it depends on what setting you have it on.

On 'Serious' for example, the worst you will get is Minor Wheel Damage. Any worse than that, and you car is totalled - in effect there is no middle ground.

Its unlikely a casual player will turn the difficulty any higher than that anyway.

On the higher difficulties, of course its more pronounced. But the handling is a million miles from realistic anyway, its not supposed to be... Its not like an old McRae game for example, where damage could really genuinely total a car but still let you limp home.

Its also a shame that there is no penalty for damaging cars - a race ends, your millionaire mates whisk you back to your RV and all is forgiven. Its a shame that you dont have to at least pay financially for damaging cars.

I digress though, its not a sim, it never was, it never wanted to be.

There is a toggle setting on the PC version between damage that affects performance and visible only. I think I have it on visible only at the moment.

I've only ever played these games on PC and I suspect that the experience is a bit different on PC3 and Xbox, but compared to 'DIRT' and 'GRID' the handing is far more realistic.

The physics on something like GTR2 are spot on when played with a wheel. I think DIRT and GRID are designed to be played with gamepads. The handling on both is very arcade like. It's a challenge, but not the same challenge you get from actually driving a car.

I'd say the same about any of the earlier NFS titles. I can't see the point of this myself and although I tried them I could never get into NFS carbon or prostreet for this reason.

NFS shift is far closer to GTR2 (and it should be as the same people were involved in making both games). The handling can be made to be very forgiving, but it still feels 'car like'.

My PS3 is redundant atm. Can't wait for this...been so long.

Are you guys still 20 odd btw?? Thought computer games were for "young people"

Then again I can probably see myself still playing >30 years old.

GT5 looks stunning. Wife & Daughter put a stop on my gaming days 'lightweight'. Got an N64, Gamecube, Wii, PS2 & 3 all gathering dust. Only the PS3 (used for bluray only) and Wii are next to the TV now, neither get used, everything else in the loft. Still feel the urge to buy new games though but they generally get one or two quick sessions before gathering dust .

I'm in my mid 30's and don't see any reason why age should be an issue.

I don't have much time to play games and only do so on my PC. I've got a pretty decent spec though and a good graphics card though so performance is up there with xbox and ps3 (often beyond in terms of graphics quality).

I heard nowadays, even girls can play games... that never used to happen.

Its funny on XBOX live, if a chick rocks up and dares to speak - watch the unwashed masses immediately whip their kegs of and start beating their meat at every word she says. Glorious amusement.

Its why I keep the vaseline handy during longer gaming sessions, you just never know.
