Parking Brake Squeak
My dealer tells me the squeak I hear when I get in and out of my car with the parking brake applied is coming from the parking brake. The squeak just appeared. They told me this is completely normal but it really bugs me that this is going on.
Is there anything I can do about it? It's annoying and embarrassing when people are around. |

It's normal and somewhat annoying but you do get used to it. I was told by my dealer that they could grease something (don't remember) to correct the noise; I didn't think it was that big of a deal and didn't want to leave it. It's been two years and the noise seems to come and go.

Well at least it isn't a one-off situation with just my car. I don't mind climbing under my car and taking the time to get rid of the annoying squeak if someone could tell me what it is causing the noise. Thanks in advance!

you cant warp a rotor by using the parking brake. and if it were possible, i would probably rather have my rear rotors warped than have the car sitting on the trans

One way to partially fix this, as noted elsewhere on this forum, is to do some e-brake stops, or drive with it slightly applied. I drove around on empty roads and would do an e-brake stop, (gently) from 25mph. I did this 5 or 6 times, and then also ran with it slightly applied around 30mph for about a minute. This greatly reduced the squeek to the point where it almost never happens.

Well, for a while the noise disappeared but I notice that it seems to come back after it's been slightly humid outside. There's something 'spring like' in the sound. It's still annoying. If I get ambitious this spring, I might crawl under the car and check it out. Thanks.

The only way to really fix the problem is to install a aftermarket e-brake shoes. The only problem is that no aftermarket (i know of) makes e-brakes for our cars.

My car squeaks with the e-brake applied when you climb in/out or otherwise load/unload the suspension. Burnishing the pads with a couple of e-brake stops does help the noise.
If you really hate it, you might go with some tire chocks for your tires and forgo use of the ebrake. The ebrake has been known to warp very hot rear rotors if applied and left on. Normal driving temps are fine though. |
