Newish Jag diesel

Anyone driven a diesel XF or similar?

That twin turbo six is 240ish bhp and 445lbs/ft - and apparently gets the rather heavy XF to 60 in 5.9s. This sounds like a "threat" to our 335d superiority. Disco is also getting the unit in the 4th iteration.

Tell me how bad they are so I can feel better.

and tbh i think they are just as good as the BMW derv.

335d is lighter than the XF though.

I know it's old news but I've seen it's going in the Disco (new news) and possibly other vehicles.

Is anyone chipping them yet?! I don't want any nasty surprises when some fat bloke in a Jag decides to try and show off is XF/whatever.

Have to say though, the new Disco with that engine could be a contender for a future purchase - will test one soon.

The refinement of the Jaguar Diesel (with adaptive engine mounts) is ahead of the BMW. I couldn't tell it was a diesel sitting at tick-over.

When I was shopping, the earlier 2.7D Jags were nowhere near as powerful as the 335D - but now with the tweaked 3.0 .... different story. It has 275 bhp and 600 NM torque.

The XFS D is a fine machine - and running on normal tyres with typical Jaguar flair will suit many who have to use the UK's varying roads. Residuals on the XF best yet for any Jag, especially the D models.

The XF is not a 3 series contender though - slightly larger, more an alternative to a 5 series.

D.

Car Magazine:

And is it a BMW 535d beater?

That old chestnut... In a word, no. We're left slightly baffled by Jaguar's acceleration claims, as BMW says its 535d SE hits 62mph in 6.4 seconds. Quite how an 85kg heavier Jaguar with a 15bhp deficit is supposed to be half a second quicker to the sixty benchmark is anyone's guess, even with a 16lb ft torque advantage. Delve deeper into the figures, though, and the XF Diesel S hits 62mph in an identical 6.4sec so there must be a l-o-n-g gearchange stretching the higher, continental sprint time.

Back in the real world, the Diesel S simply doesn't feel to have the catapult thrust of the BM. Where the 535d simply flings itself to the horizon with occasionally worrying vigour, the Jag is merely rapid in most circumstances.

Verdict

It's a shame the Jaguar XF Diesel S is going to be compared with the BMW 535d so much. The BM is an extraordinary car, the Jag a merely excellent one. In isolation, it's a cracking diesel exec that happens to cost £3000 less than the 535d. It might not feel bullet fast, but believe us, the thrust on tap in the new S now means nobody can accuse the diesel XF of being too slow.

Phew.

Lets hope Jag are not following Audi with their over-optimistic 0-62 times!!

No threat mate.

We all know the 335d is quicker than what book figures suggest!

355d standard trim 0-100 in 13secs, that jag diesel will be closer to the A5 3.0tdi in 17 secs

Flip side ... Autocar put the Jaguar XF ahead of the 535D. Rating the flowing handling, refinement and interior feel-good factor as well as bare performance.

0-60 figures are for top trumps kiddies. One little number cannot sum up an entire car. Unless the reader is also 1-dimensional in the cognizant dept.

0-60 in 2.6 DOES sum up the Ultima GTR rather well reckon...

Anyway we don't have 535ds - we have the quicker, lighter, cooler 335d...

This has just been moved to off topic - the area that says "if it has nothing to do with cars post it here" (or similar... That's why I posted it in the main section!

Hi!
Before I placed my order for the 320D M-Sport Le Man Blue, which I am expecting delivery in a couple of weeks, I test drove the following:-
1) Jag XF Premium Luxury 3.0 V6 Diesel
2) 525D M-Sport
3) 320D M-Sport
4) C220D
5) A4D
The drive in the Jag was superb, the feeling of comfort, luxury of the dashboard fitments, the feeling of detachment from the rif raff outside, the goodies included in the base price.
All added to the ‘feel good’ factor. And I did feel good!
But the prob for me was, and is, that it is BIG. I am sure it is bigger that the old Ford Granada Ghia that I had and I thought that was big enough. I felt like a Mr Big and a little detached. It did not feel nippy! Not the sort of car perhaps to fight your way into the car park at Sainsbury’s, for a few bottles of lager. You know, or perhaps you don’t, waiting for the gear change lever to raise from the centre consul, the shutters over the air vents to roll back etc. It’s pure theatre.
I ‘enjoyed’ the drive and preferred the feel of the 320D.
However, I do recommend you take a visit to your local Jag dealer for a test drive for your own opinion. My Wife absolutely loved it. She felt that the seats were just like armchairs and she so loved the deep green colour!
I am beginning to feel a bit guilty!
Cheers!
