Why's my e92 328i 6mt slower than 325i w/ auto
Makes no fucking sense. I have rims, other than that both stock.
it feels like it has lost 50hp since i bought it, this almost seems like proof of that. |

For instance, say your wheel/tire combo weighs 10 more pounds per corner. That's an increase of 40lbs in unsprung weight. This equates to about .4 tenths of a second in the quarter mile or approximately 4 car lengths in distance. So, assuming you drive the car perfectly and you raced the exact same car without heavy aftermarket wheels, you would lose by ~4 car lengths in 1/4 mile or 1320 feet.

You probably got some heavy 19in rims. Wheel weight has drastic effect on your cars perfromance. This is why I won't go higher than 18s at this point. I'm guessing your wheels are well over 50lbs a piece (rim/tires). Take those heavy-ass clunkers off and put your stocks back on and watch how much quicker your car will get.

wheels have a lot to do with it, i put 19's m6 reps on my car and felt the same way as you do. so i just sold them and went down to 18 and lighter wheels feels much better...

It's 40lbs of rotational mass which is a bit different.

I'm not sure I buy all that. I don't think these VMRs are *THAT* much heavier than the stock 197s I had on my coupe. Also, I think you would lose a fair amount of rotational inertia by ditching the runflats with those super thick sidewalls, no? |

funny, my manual 328 is ALOT faster than a 325 auto.
I can't say wheels make the car that much slower. My winter wheels are 20lbs each (*OUCH*) lighter than the 60lb stock wheel/tire combo, but its not like that transforms the car (it does keep them from hopping on bumps so much though).

Trust me, I use to do A LOT of drag racing, and horsepower is expensive. 10 whp is equal to about 100lbs of sprung weight or just 10lbs of unsprung weight. Once you max out on horsepower financially, the only way to go faster is to reduce weight. Things like suspension, type of tires, etc. are also very imprtant but thats a whole different topic. And when you go thru the traps I've watched it a million times 1 tenth of a second is about 1 car length at terminal speeds in the 110mph range.

This is very true! Driver ability plays into the manual cars so much. I personally suck at drving a stick in the performance sense. Don't get me wrong, I've had lots of stick cars of the years but there is a huge difference between driving one and driving one well. I always had a drag car with an automatic, some steep rear gears, and a big converter. I could blow higher horsepower manual cars away off the line! My 60 foot times were great even on street tires I could go sub 2.00 seconds and in the 1.6 second range on drag radials.

Really? Everytime I get a 328i loaner when mine goes in the shop, it feels like a dog. Granted, they are not really broken in (09s) and my car is a broken-in 330xi 6M, but I can't dig the autos. I know it sounds silly, and a lot of it is personal preference, but I didn't expect much of a difference and I feel one every time. I have to drive it in DS just to keep from getting annoyed.

I don't know what proof I can bring... For those that say its a driver's race I say BS. There were pulls from 40mph and I tried both 2nd and 3rd gear and both times he just pulled away from me. Not fast or anything, but a car length every 5 seconds or so.

I tend to agree the heavier rims and tire combo is hurting you. If you stepped up from 18" to 19" your tires and wheels are both going to be heavier. When you have limited hp to start with adding any weight will cause performance to go down. |

may have less hp than a camry but its not slower.. g35 sedan has 280 something and i stay with my friends just fine and he has a couple mods. Its not always a win on paper weight is a huge factor.

I've race a g35 in my manual 328i. that was my first time racing a g35, from a stop. I expected to be smoked, but surprisingly I did not get smoked. I can keep up pretty well, and I even had a bad start in 1st gear. |
