radar's any use?
im thinking of picking up a radar detector (either escort passport 8500 x50 or valentine v1) and was wondering if they are much use around our area (tri-state that is). With radar interference/pollution from other car's and other interferences, do these things really help?

here's my advise...first of all im a cop and i get asked this all the time...most of us at work keep the radar unit off until we see a car that looks like its going way faster than everyone else on the road...i can't speak for everyone but this is what i do...so what im getting at is as long as the radar unit is off your radar detector is useless....so use it wisely because there's no guarentee it will get you out of getting stopped...just words of advise for u

v1 is a good investment
save my ass many many times off topic - lately i notice that a lot of cops are switching from radar to laser guns in jersey. which also mean my v1 is useless. )o= just drive carefully |

I mean I'm not planing on any reckless driving, just plain ol' 80 mph cruising with out having to worry about being caught in a speed trap. I'll try out my cousins v1 for a day and see how i feel about it

V1 FTW
I've had the V1 for about 6 years. My dad has an Escort. There is no doubt that the V1 is better. But you can't rely 100% on the radar anymore. You have to use your head and keep your eyes peeled. As several people have already mentioned, troopers will pace and/or use laser. They'll also use "instant on" and get you that way. Ask me how I know...

Ive had radar detectors since I started driving. Currently using a V1. FWIW, I haven't gotten a speeding ticket in about 10 yrs. Not because of the detector, but because of driving smarter.
If you need a detector to tell you to slow down and you ACTUALLY have to slow down, then you were driving stupidly and you probably deserve a ticket if you get caught. If you're pacing the rest of the cars then you'll either get picked out of the lot because you're driving a BMW or you will just pass the cop and all will be merry. If you're watching all around you, especially in front of you, and you see brake lights up ahead in a group, not just one car, then there's more than likely a cop there. You don't need a detector for that. You can buy a detector for $499 or whatever it is these days and make believe you can drive safer. Or, you can put that money towards mods and actually drive smarter. Your choice.
