Possible first speed camera error...

Anyone know how fast a camera van can clock you? Just went over the brow of a hill on the A39 into Truro (just after a two lane overtaking section) and there was a van. Was doing 75-80ish but saw it very quickly and slowed to 55ish withuin a couple of seconds(it's a 60 limit). Doh!! Properly sneaky placement.

Just when I was saying I'd never had points...

Done some checking - it seems that the laser range is massive but the camera/visual range is only 500m max (I reckon I was over 500m away) and even at that range they often get errors - will have to cross my fingers and hope!

Wow, those 'due care and attention' posts really did bite you on the arse eh.

Here's hoping you dodged that one!

I personally am really considering getting a cheap laser detector fitted as they seem to be getting very sneaky in their positioning and camourflage.

Apparently they have learned to "aim low" with the lasers to avoid them being detected when going around bends over the brow of a hill (like I was) - gits!

Don't you believe it! Plod will still send you the NIP and you'll have to prove you were out of range in court.

Innocent until proven guilty? Not bloody likely!

Your only option is to wait 2 weeks as aready mentioned.

Mate, they (if there actually looking at that very moment) will have you as you came over the top. They have you before you see them.

You of course could be very lucky!

Fingers crossed.

I've got a laser detector and I've been surprised how close I've been before they fire the laser, they don't seem to do it from a long distance.

But they don't help mate, all they do is tell you you've been done. When it beeps its already too late. The only solution is a jammer which are illegal.

I had a Road Pilot for two years. Shiiiite. I ebayed it as it was a waste of time.

If it beeps at you its too late. Their laser has already hit you and clocked you.

I may have been done on the M4 this week at Swindon. Not paying attention and went past a van at around an indicated 84mph. They ticket you at 79mph and onwards. As I am in a lease car the 14 days doesn't count. I am also sure the 'i didn't receive a NIP in 14 days' dodge has been covered by a new law that their proof of posting within 14 days stands up in court whether you received it or not.

Ahhh. Sod that then. Still would like an audible signal when I get to a speed camera though so might look into one of those tiny ones.

Road Angel Pro is great, warns for approved van sites, so you know when there might be one coming up. (they can't park anywhere, they have to notify of proposed locations) The new pro GSM model allows users to notify in real time of live van site. Well worth it IMO.

They have laser detection too, a bit iffy, but gives you more chance than no chance. It will pick up laser reflections from your bonnet if it strays whilst they are zapping you, but if they are spot on the flat surface of the reg plate (what they aim for) there'll be no reflections for you sensor to detect.

This is why they assess your speed, carefully aim THEN pull the trigger so the laser on time is minimal and the risk of detection minimal. I was ticketed at 83 on an empty, straight M6 at just over 1000 metres. The units are type approved for this in clear weather with good sight.

So they will NOT zap you as soon as you appear over a brow or round a bend. Firstly the law states they must 'assess your speed and be sure you are speeding BEFORE they attempt to verify your speeding using the gun' they can't just zap everyone.

Believe it or not a portion of the videos of every zap are audited and they get risk losing their operators licence if they zap too many people who AREN'T speeding.

This means if the zap photo of you is you coming over abrow then it won't stand because they couldn't have had time to assess your speed properly beforehand.

They also can only zap people in the approved direction on the section of road, usually the side they are parked on. So no sneaky catching people going the other way.

I got caught a while back by a copper in the road. Road Angel definately helped as I slowed down enough and he offered me the Speed Awareness course instead of the points. The course is a laugh!
