rear brakes.. is this normal?
I just had my rear brakes replaced by the dealer and now it seems like the brakes don't cover the entire disc like it should. This is after driving in the rain for 60 mins.. you can see the part where the brake pads cover and is covered with rust.

Looks like wrong pads, make sure they replace your rotors now, you are gonna have a hella nice wear line in those! If you do not replace rotors they will wear pads wrong, gl.

Before you jump to conclusions, I've seen wear like this on new pads installed on used rotors.
By the way, it's practically IMPOSSIBLE for the dealer to install the wrong pad. Most of the pads BMW use have rather unique backing plate and there's practically NO WAY to install a wrong set of pads since the backing plates won't fit. For example there's no way I can install, say, an E46 323Ci rear pad on an E92 328i front brakes. Just not possible. And if there happen to be some cross model compatibility, like E46 330i front brakes and E46 M3 front brakes, the pad backing plate would be the same and hence the amount of pad sweep area would be similar as well. |

I thought BMW always changes rotors and pads together? I'd definitely bring it back and have the dealer take a look at it.

pads are sat in wonky.
This can happen if the discs have a altered profile due to uneven wear. But that looks just like other sets ive seen poorly fitted. The pads are not seated correctly, and are burning in at an angle

Fairly normal. The pads have to bed-in and adapt the shape of the old rotor. Look closely at your rotor, you'll see it's more worn toward the inside edge. You can also have your rotors turned if you need to help this.

Ive seen a Z4 with the exact same disc pattern, and after a change of pads, it was gone. Trust me, the pads are in wrong

The consequence of a too-thin rotor is warpage if overheated. If it does warp - and that's a big IF - then you would compromise the brake system and stopping performance. And if it does warp, you'll know it pretty quickly (pulsing through brakes), and then you just change the rotor which you'd have done anyway. I've turned the rotors on my BMW 335 and Mercedes SL500 and they've been fine. No warpage at all. The dealers may not turn the rotor, but almost any independent brake shop will. |
