Getting 20MPG

I'm averaging 20MPG and I don't drive aggressively or rev the engine up very high.

I typically shift around 2K RPM. Am I doing something wrong here? What RPMs are you guys typically shifting around normally? I know my mileage won't be ideal since I live in a hilly area but I think I am really on the low side.

You bought a BMW, they're not built for mileage.

Shifting at 2000RPM is too low. You are strangling the engine. Bimmer's engines are meant to be pushed hard. If you never rev it high enough, the engine will be clogged with deposits before long.

Got about 1700 miles on my car so far and i'm averaging 21.3 on my auto. I hear the mileage goes way up after a year or so or something? Btw I've just started to drive spiritedly so my mileage may go up or down

Hmm, you dont have the fuel economy meter, but I would suggest shifting up at like 2500 and going a bit lighter on the throttle.

I would guess that you might be trying to push the car to get thru the first few gears, and not spending enough time cruising, which is where your fuel ecomony comes from. But, I guess if you live in a hilly area, you might not see a better economy unless you change how you drive, ie coasting up hills and accelerating lightly down then to keep momentum up. Trying to maintain constant speed up hills will bring your fuel economy down (just reiterating that, sounds like you know this.)

Lower than expected gas mileage should not surprise anyone in the U.S. where gasoline contains 10% ethanol. Ethanol is known to negatively affect the gas mileage; according to some studies - up to 30% drop. So there.

If you want good mileage you should get a 320 or 318d. They are very fuel efficient. A 335i is meant for driving fast and hard and having fun with imo, not saving fuel.

Not a chance. The lowest you can go with in the U.S. is 328. The only diesel you can get is the 335d.

20 mpg sounds good to me. I get 18-19 on my 6AT. Your mileage isn't going to get much better. You might as well use the fun peddle more.

20 sounds pretty fine to me. I get between 15 to 17. In fact, it decreases all the time as I'm sitting there in NYC traffic. But as I hit the highway, it goes back up to 17ish...until traffic awaits me, again.

WTF? I know I dont have a 335i but damn you guys are getting horrible milage! I DO drive like a bitch and all but unless my average gauge is way off, between 50%HWY and 50%city my average has been 30.4 this tank... and I reset it every time I get gas. And I think it makes a huge difference that I dont really speed or gas it too often...

Its usually about 25.5 with more city then hwy... 06 330i 6M and if you leave your car idling for long periods of time (warming it up in the morning) it drops the average as well in my car.

Maybe it's because I have a slow 330, but even with the xi I am getting 25-27 avg mpg. I do live in a very flat area, but damn is the mileage that much better in a 330 over the 335?
Can anyone confirm this?
