Question about Manual Shifting on AT

Hi,

I've been messing with the manual shifting on my AT 328i. Pretty cool, though I have a question -

I see that it automatically downshifts for me. I presume it's cool to let the car do this instead of me, however, why is it when I come to a complete stop it stays in M2? I always shift it to M1 before taking off and am wondering why the car doesn't do this for me.

Ideas? Do some of you take off in M2 without downshifting to M1?

Thanks y'all.

Jay

It automatically downshifts to avoid stalling, and auto upshifts to avoid over heating, beyond that it's all what you want to do.

it doesn't go down to first because well - it doesn't need to.

So it's common to take off in M2 from a dead stop and not hard on the tranny?

In normal (non-sport) mode, the auto tranny always starts the car in 2nd to save gas.

In manual mode it does the same on its own, but , as you say, you can override - in fct, if you downshift yourself before the car does, you can downshift to M1.

In (non-manual) sports mode, it downshifts to 1st gear on its own.

+1 in most autos (not just bmws) today i think they start on second gear. the 1st gear isnt very effectively in city driving

This is completely accurate. My E90 is 6MT, but the 750i does this exactly.

+2 its true. I always drive in manual mode, and start off in 2. I only use 1 when I'm driving uphill in the parking garage... mostly because it sounds bad-ass
