Shifting according to computer?
Hi,
is it good to shift according to the computer? As I see it, it tells you to shift as soon as you hit 1400 or 1500 rpms... is this OK? Will it not damage the engine if I rev it so low? My dad suggested I shift at like 4k rpm... is that sensible? Thanks. |

that's too low... i think over 2k rpm is enough but the the perfect range for easy driving somewhere between 2.5k to 3k.

You must have an auto, just be light on the gas pedal and let the computer sort it out.

There is an upshift indicator on the board computer, it has two arrows when you're OK, when you should shift in either direction, it visually indicates by hiding one arrow and telling you which gear you're supposed to be in. |

Follow it when you want to save fuel. Shift at higher RPM when you want more acceleration.
4k rpm is not sensible unless you are going for some semi-aggressive acceleration. It would also waste a lot of gas.

YES, you should shift when the computer tells you. This is a different engine, the older shifting habits do not apply !
The computer indicates shifting at 1800 RPM. This way, after shifting your RPM will be 1300-1400, which is the minimum RPM for the maximum torque, so the car mileage is maximum there. The automatic gearbox also shifts at < 2000RPM (in D mode). From my experience, in a busy town you just cannot shift the 335i at > 3000RPM, and even this is too much. There is too much power involved and the car will just snap forward instead of behaving civilised.

I don't think the gear shift indicator is implemented in US cars yet.

I drove the new Z4 in Austria and it had the indicator in the top left of that screen. And it was way smaller than those numbers in the video.
It bugged the crap out of me though. I don't want someone else telling me when to shift, let alone the car itself. I've been driving for over 10 years and I think I'm qualified enough to make my own decisions.

As a newbie driver it would be interesting to drive the way it tells you to see if it just improves me. I wonder if we can do a software upgrade for it to tell us this for usa cars.

4k rpm in 1st?? I rarely hit that in any gear under normal driving and I drive pretty fast. I usually shift out of first under 2k.
