oil cap wrench
Hey Guys, do any of the cap wrenches/adapters from say Wal Mart or Harbor Freight fit the N54 (that probably would be too easy)? Or is it a must to spend $34 for a BMW cap wrench and 27mm socket? Thanks!
Although, I have come across this one from bavauto for $15.... part# 05348 Tool - Oil Filter Housing Cap with 17mm hex head |

Yup - a strap wrench worked perfectly for me.

I've had a cap wrench on backorder with Bavarian Autosport for a month now; still no idea when they're getting any in stock.
In the meantime I used a Craftsman strap wrench, which worked just fine. |

I just went to a bike store and got a pedal/crank wrench for $10. They work real good for taking off the cooling fan as well.

Fact of the matter is that the oil filter cover should be torqued to 30 nm I believe (I have to look at the manual again to double check that number). The other issue I have found with universal strap or chain oil wrenches is that you can damage, crack or puncture your oil filter cover. I believe Advance auto parts sells the 86 mm wrench for like 5 or 6 dollars if you don't want to spring for the factory BMW OEM wrench.

Lol
You could even paint match it to the color of your car and leave it on your filter cap to show your friends. Or cover it with chia-pet seeds and grow grass on it. |
