BMW Diesels. - Blowing Smoke?

How well are these cars running 2-5 yrs down the road? I'm speaking only of BMW diesels. Are they blowing a lot of smoke? Have injector problems? How is the plumbing for the turbos holding up?

The 335D with re-generating particle filters never blows smoke.

Look in the UK section you will find many, many Diesels (quite a few chipped). Ask there. The odd little one-off glitch occasionally raises its head, but no systematic failures of any kind. Lots of new rear tyres though .....

No problems at all with mine after 3 years.

From what I read diesel is more reliable but nowadays a more expensive engine due to the CO2 restrictions imposed. Urea, dual particulate filters and low SAPS oils minimize the smoke. But I only speak from what I glean from reading Google hits. Europe is the place to look regarding diesel auto tech since they have had it for a long time so your data is more reliable.

This is a good read

Thanks both of you. I spend some time perusing the UK forums and most of the annoyances have to do with BMW's method for routing blow-by back through the intake. It appears to be worse than the 335i (diesel runs higher compression). Messy Messy.

I would guess the usual point/failure would be turbo, emissions, but least of all the engine. Engine strong like bull. Transmission is upgraded ZF to handle the extra torque. Black smoke I have not seen yet. I will try revving in neutral to redline once the engine has 1500 miles on it and will let you know if it smokes.

well

I am from Spain, I own a 330d, and believe me... if you see smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe... it because something is broken. The new bmw diesels (mine is from 2006), does not have any kind of smoke coming out from anywhere.

The engine is robust, as you say, more than in the gas models, because the compression ratios are higher. The turbo, after some problems in early 2000-2002, I have never heard again of any pandemic issues with it.

They are really great cars, and because of the higher torque than in gas models, if you do have a heavy foot, you might me changing the rear wheels more often than with gas models. Hell, my car has even more torque than the previous m3!!

Best!
