long crank - dealer cannot replicate. Advice?

I have an e92 with 31k on it - manual sports package. I've noticed that after sitting overnight (regardless of weather), it takes about 2-3 seconds for it to start up. After it warms up its not an issue. Additionally, during the first hour or so, it will have a very rough idle.

The dealer had it overnight while doing scheduled maintenance and claimed they were unable to replicate the issue. The car has just had the microfilter and oil replaced, and still no effect. Anything I can check or do myself? I am no mechanic but I am thinking clogged fuel lines or something requiring an oil/fuel additive to be poured in? I haven't done anything, just wanted to get your opinion.

If you know someone with a Flip video camera, borrow it. Or if you have a digital camera that records video, make a simple video of your morning startup and show it to the SA. 2-3 seconds is probably not enough to trigger an HPFP replacement. Mine is up to about 6 seconds for morning startup. But it runs fine after that. It will be going in soon, along with the video.

Thats exactly what happen to my car..it started out with 2-3 seconds of cranks..took it to the dealer and they could not do anything about it since it didn't throw any type of codes. A week or 2 later..even longer cranks and my service engine light eventually popped up. It was a HPFP failure. Recording the long cranks is not going to help and dealers are not going to replace it until something actually fails.

It's unlikely they're going to replace anything unless something is actually broken or throwing errors. Long cranks are certainly a sign the HPFP might be going, but until you hit limp mode they won't be replacing it.

My second HPFP was replaced, last week, during my 30k mile vehicle check, they said the car threw some long cranking codes and that prompted them to run other tests per an SIB and the results indicated the HPFP was bad.

Its not the dealers that play this game, its BMWNA. Before the dealer can replace your hpfp under warranty your car has to throw codes of a failing fuel pump. Until then the long cranks will get you nowhere at the dealership.. Unfortunately its the way it is..

It's both...If no fail code throw, they will open a PUMA case and go form there. They replaced injector/lines/adjust pressure test everything they can on my car for 3 weeks before changing the freaking HPFP!

I know someone very well who is a service tech at a bmw dealership. He sees these issues all day long on the 328s and 335s. Keep going back every time you have this issue. Keep your complaints consistent. This will create a paper trail on the issue. Once you get to your 3rd complaint, write BMW NA a letter and send it Certified w/a return receipt. List the issues and visits you've had to your dealer and tell them you are going to file a lemon law case against them if they do not fix the issue.

Check out - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5599690

If you're tired of BMW jerking you around, then you need to do what other members are doing.

Haha guess what the problem was . HPFP is being replaced, I did get a 335d loaner with 2 kms on the odo. This car has so much torque, lets just say I got a ticket within the first hour of driving this thing!

Yeah unfortunately the dealer won't do anything unless the HPFP totally fails or throws a code.

My car is experiencing the long cranks again and I took it in since I had a long trip ahead and don't wanna get stranded. They had my car for about an hour and gave it back to me, saying no code, no go.

Sucks that you have to be basically stranded for them to do anything abot it.
