Why is my 2009 335 Exhaust mute?!
Okay, all you 2009 335 owners out there...I have a question for you.
I had a 2007 335i Sport Auto in 2007. I sold that car and went to a 535 in 2008. I just went back to a 2009 335i x-drive 6 speed manual. When I had the 2007 335 I absolutely loved the exhaust note. It had a snarl under load and when you let off the gas, the exhaust let out a burble. We also purchased a 135i Sport Auto in 2008 and its exhaust is even more aggressive and has even more burble off throttle. Now I just got my 2009 335ix 6 speed and it is bone quiet. No snarl, no burble, no nothing. It sounds exactly like my son's 2006 330. What happened?!?! Are all 2009 335 exhausts quieted down? Is it manual vs. auto? Do the x-drive cars get no performance exhaust? I'm at a loss, and very disappointed. Steve

You're welcome.

Thanks for the reply. Okay, looks interesting, i'm digging into that post, but it does not answer my original question. My 2007 335 had an exhaust note that I thought was pretty aggressive and anytime I left off the throttle at slow speeds I could hear a burble and that was all stock! My 2009 does none of this, stock. Completely different exhaust character. So my question is, did they quiet down the 09s? or the x-drives? or what?

Maybe its a one-off thing or defect. My 2009 has the rich-fuel burble when i let off the gas in 1st and decel. Hear the combustion pops and everything. Its loud as hell when i apply load onto it in 2nd-4th between 3500-5500 RPM. I also didnt go the "normal" safe route with engine break-in.
450 miles so far and have applied variable throttle pulls/load from 2-5th up to 6500RPM and decel back down at 0% throttle. I feel this method seats the rings correctly and "opens the engine up". |

Was your 2007 a coupe and is your 2009 a sedan? That might explain it because the sedan has a resonator.

Could be the software version.
You could also try the "golf tee mod" I linked to and see if that makes a difference. In my case, it was very noticeable to me. |

You would want the lower right hand mod, feel free to peruse the rest of the mods as it sounds like some of them might also appeal to you:

If im write there is a vacuum line that goes to one(driver side) exhaust pipe in the back, it does something and muffles the exhaust note if you clamp the line it makes the exhaust a tiny bit louder.
