SSK on XI
which SSK do you use?
what's been your experience? recommend it? I did but most of the info is on difficulty of install rather than experience |

I have the BMW short shifter and the perforated M knob. I haven't tried any other options, but I drove a stock 330i last weekend and difference between the two was night and day or should I say sports car and truck. The install is actually very easy. You don't have to go under the car at all. Look for the install thread.

When I bought the SSK I had to buy the entire kit, now you can just buy the shifter. My part number for the kit with knob and boot was 25110430357 but the shifter has the #0434219 on it. It was the 330i version. I would guess the entire part number is 25110434219. I would just get the shift lever as the knob and boot with my kit was not one I wanted to use. I purchased the perforated knob and brake handle #25118037308. Hope this helps.

I had the bmw ssk originally and it was ok. The intall was quick. It took about 15-20 minutes. Then UUC came out with their ssk and i had it installed because you had to remove the transfer case. all I can say is WOW. i have the UUC weighted shift knob also installed. Its a little pricey but its so worth it. If anyone is interestedyou should find the post about the UUC ssk on the forum. Me and this guy longo had them installed on our xi models and did a write up on it.

I just had a dealer tell me that the BMW Performance SSK would not shorten the stick and only marginally shorten the throws. He also said that the install would be very involved and take 2-3 service hours....what's the deal??? I also did not know that UUC made a SSK for the Xi. I must be missing something or maybe it's cause I have the 328, not 330, 335.

Summary: the stock style shifters from other 3-series suck IMO. They just shorten the throw while increasing effort. Not all that bad unless you have a notchy 2nd gear like most of us. Then these shifters make it even worse. I had a 330 shifter in for a month and took it right out for the UUC which is pricey but substantially better IMO. FWIW you don't drop the "transfer case" to install a UUC on a 335XI- UUC instructions state that you need to lower the whole rear of the trans by putting a jack under under it, unbolting the exhaust, unbolt the trans X-member/support and then lower the trans enough to get your hand up there from the bottom. The procedure is actually required on a 335i as well- it's not a 335Xi thing. I describe in my DIY here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...&highlight=uuc how I was able to do it entirely from the top but it involves grinding a small relief in a non-critical area of the steel pivot cup on the UUC. Easy to do with the right tool and a ton faster than getting under the car.

I gave up on this as the BMW OEM SSK is not intended for an xi. I contacted so many dealers on this and they all said the same thing.
Interesting people here seem to be running the full kit (not just a knob) without an issue. |

So is there anything special for an xi if one wants to just replace the tall oem shift knob w a shorter weighted one? Does it just stick up a little higher compared to a non-xi?
I can deal w that.

^Nothing special to do, (pull off the knob, put on a new one) but that doesn't really accomplish much except asthetics. If you're trying to reduce the throw and shifting experience just the knob won't do too much. Some may say it's actually tougher to shift due to the loss of leverage, despite the weight increase in the knob.
XI and non-XI OEM knobs are the same. My issue remains that BMW dealers don't seem to support a SSK (full kit) for XIs. |
