What are my warranty options for my '07 335i?
I have a July 2007 built 335i E90 that I leased 2 years ago. I'm coming up on lease end here in a few months and I would like to purchase the car. If I buy out my lease there will come a time where I surpass the 4yr/50K mark for the warranty and free maintenance. What, if any, extended warranty plans for BMW are worth it out there? I hear people talking about getting their car CPO'd, but is that worth it in the long run? What about the maintenance plan?
I guess I'd always heard the most warranty extension plans end up being rip-offs, so I don't want to make a bad deal. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a better buy to trust BMW reliability and just fix things as needed. |

Since you're the original owner, you can extend the warranty another 2 yrs or 100k miles dude.
Make sure to compare dealerships and see which ones can give you the most competitive price for it. Its not cheap tho, I think its like ~2-3K |

You can also go with a third party but be very cautious that the company will still be around. I paid 2k for a 6yr 100k from AUL (but I have 2 left of original so I get basically 4 extra years). I wasn't original owner so BMW wasn't an option, but 2 years for 2-3k is steep (unless you're putting on serious mileage)

If you're at all mechanically inclined you can do a lot of the work yourself. Oil changes, inspections, fluid changes all can be done fairly easily with a few tools.
If you're not the type to get your hands dirty then I would suggest talking to the dealership and consider an extended SERVICE warranty. Usually the warranty price is based on a percentage of the residual value of the car. I myself passed up the service warranty when my E46 was about to go out of warranty and I'm glad I did. They were going to charge me around $2,500 for an additional 2 years. Their argument was that brakes along was going to be around $1,800, but depending on driving style this could not even come up until after the two years I would have paid for. Needless to say I DIY and I change my brakes for about $250 an axle. Oil changes cost about $60 instead of $150 from the dealer.

An additional warranty on the vehicle may be a good idea, but I'd pass on the Extended Maintenance. It will take quite a few brake jobs and oil changes to make the Extended Maintenance pay for itself.
