DC/VA/MD M3 Diffuser and front lip Mod Shops/Installers?
Hey Guys,
Sorry been MIA for most of April/May; military had me TDY to LA and other places and I am just getting back and settled somewhat after outprocessing to my next duty station after PCA=permanent change of assignment orders! Yes I have been re-assigned but not that bad as I am in Baltimore now and still in the area at least for the next 11 months. After that I head off to Texas for the next 2 yrs unfortunately but ah I guess all good things must come to an end huh? Anyway am thinking of adding a carbon fiber rear diffuser to the car but am wondering on who to go to for the install. Any ideas? I mean LA and other places have tons of shops but I think DC/VA sort of has a dearth in tuners and such. Anyway I thought I'd go to you guys and see what you guys may know or have found! Also am looking at possibly the Dinan ECU upgrade OR another alternative if any of you have one installed I'd love to hear your thoughs/reviews. Anybody done a short shifter yet? That's been running thru my mind too! Anyway hope to see you guys at a meet or get together soon...has anyone been having any? Like I said I've been out of the loop but things should slow down abit around 1 July for me for at least the next 11 months! See ya!

Get it done right the first time with proper adhesives and fitment. Go to WagonWorks in Alexandria. Ask for Rav Persad and tell him Ben sent you. You will love the work that they do.

Rear diffuser is very easy to do. Much much easier than the front lip to do as the 3m tape holds is up very well in addition to the bolts which are underneath the car.
I have the VRS type 2 which is an easier install than type 1.

Honestly, the 3M tape does not hold it up at all. A member here, installed with 3M and the bolts. It eventually starts to peel away and gap, looks like crap. Another friend of mine had WagonWorks do it and it looks great. No gapping at all. The only true way is to urethane it on the back bumper with no gap. Honestly, it is not worth trying to save a little bit of money, rather than letting a body shop do it right the first time.

Wagonworks did my rear bumper/diffuser on my 550i a couple years ago. very professional. It wasn't perfectly to my liking so they offered to rework it at their expense.

I attached my diffuser without any trouble. Preparation is key as you have to clean the area and rub it down with alcohol before attaching the diffuser with 3m tape. I've had my diffuser on for 6 months without any problem. There is no gap as I had used my jack stands with covers to apply pressure to the diffuser for a few hours to make sure the diffuser bonded well.

did you use the 3m adhesion promoter that body shops use? else the tape will eventually fail.

I didn't need that stuff. What needs to be done is that the area needs to be prepped and cleaned of all grease. I spent a good 30mins cleaning it and then using alcohol and applying pressure to make the bond. If the job is rushed and the surface is not clean the job will fail. So far >6months and the thing is on there tight. It helps that the VRS type 2 is lightweight and a small piece rather than the type 1 which needs more prep and likely an additional cement/bonding agent to get it to adhere to the underbody.

Know Wagonworks well. They have done work on my 325xi, and previous e46 M3 as well. Will probably stop by and let them attach my type II CF rear diffuser when I do it next month.

Rav attempted to install it today. Unfortunately part did not fit flushly and was out of alignment when they dry fitted it. Giving Rav much credit he did NOT install the part and waited to talk to me 1st and show me the manufacturing defects. Seeing it...I agree it would have looked like shyt close up with significant gaps between the bumper and the rear diffuser so I am glad he did not install it. Will be returning the CF VRS Type II rear diffuser replica and ordering the original part...despite my fellow M3 buddy's assurances that the distributor he gave me has supplied him with multiple quality CF parts for his M3. I guess you do get what you pay for and if it looks too good to be true...then it probably is.
Thanks for the recommendation and reference. I'll be returning to them when I get the new part.

Yeah now the supplier is saying that it was "test fit" before shipment and using the provided adhesive should work" WTF???
I think he's smoking something...oh yeah and sent him the pics too. Yes much props to Rav at Wagonworks..had been there before its been a few years and they do very good/excellent work. Will be back when I get this situation resolved and a new part (one that fits)! However if the original supplier insists on his parts fitment then I will have to go public with my ah "episode" which I am sure he doesn't want as he'll lose business/market share probably. Balls in his court now... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ================================================== ==== To: mdrobc13@msn.com Subject: RE: New Private Message at BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2009 03:24:36 +0000 "Hi Rob, Sorry to keep you waiting, I was just back in city. I've check the pix and would like to check, do you use the adhesive to install it with I've attaced with the diffuser? We have do a testing before shipment, I think it's workable, please confirm, thanks. Regards"
