Did you try adjusting the radio volume knob while on a call to see if you could turn it up. I paired by BlackBerry 8830 and it worked with any issues.

Also your phone should have a "bluetooth volume" just like it has separate volumes for alarms, ringers and music
That was an issue I had with my iPhone but when I was in a call I just upped the volume on my phone and that fixed it. Just in case it isn't the volume on your radio. Also, make sure it is just not your friend playing a trick on you by being completely silent j/k
