Hey, that's great news man . You probably don't drive you car aggressively, do you? I don't. A romp thru the gears every now and then doesn't qualify as aggressive on a car like this IMO, but I haven't done any of that yet. My car didn't burn any oil in 1,500 miles either, and most of those were near 4K rpm on highways. That's good enough for me, but nothing in 6K miles is remarkable. Hope mine turns out like yours. Take care. |

No tracking yet.....90% highway, avg speed 70-80mph with regular full blasts to 8400 rpm off the rev limiter in D5...also my break-in was <4k rpm for first 500 miles and around 5k up to 1200 miles so not conservative... i have exceeded the designated break-in speed limit a couple of times with various engine speeds etc ...since break-in have gone xxxmph+ a few times in a "controlled" setting ....and regularly use D5 for short bursts ....so would have expected some oil drop off but I guess highway is much easier on oil ...or the gauge is faulty...!!

Sh!t, I had mine serviced just over a month ago and added a quart over the weekend. Mine only drops on long highway drives.

I had the 1,200 mile service done and mine was actually overfilled on the way home. I got home and drained out about 3/4 of a liter and mine has been at the Full mark ever since. I think I have around 6,000 miles.

No appreciable oil drop for me, either, after 11K miles and 2 oil changes. It did drop from full to just a notch under, though. Not enough for me to have to add oil.

I do moderately aggresive driving and I have been to the track 2 times. In total my S65 burnt 2lt of oil over a span of 5,000km after the initial break in service. When I dumpted the 2nd lt bottle in I was starting to get really worried with the oil consumption as it appeared to me that the engine drinks 1lt over an average of 2,500km - which seemed a lot.
Since then the oil gauge has not dropped a bit and I am at 22,000km! The last 4,000km were over a trip to Europe where I was frequently driving quite fast (160 - 250km/h) on the highways over long periods of time. Now I stand surprised with the oil level not having reduced a bit over the past 13,000km or so! Last edited by gr8000; 06-10-2009 at 08:18 AM.. |

I had to add a quart at 3200 miles.... 2200 miles after my first service. Dealer gave me a quart for the trunk... said it will need it between 5 and 6K. I keep the revs and shift points up (I'll hang in 3rd and 4th around town) but never beat on the car.
They say oil consumption is normal. |

I had the dealer add a quart in at the 3500 mile mark since it dropped down enough for the light to illuminate...this is of course after the initial service. I drive her like she is supposed to be driven!

The M burns less oil than my 335i, after 3 consecutive track days level appeared the same.

6500 miles since my 1200 mile service and ZERO consumption . Driving consists of a very short commute daily, which I counter by taking her out on canyon runs three times a week.

Sweet, so the whole oil burn is more so based on your driving. If your slamming it home everyday then more than likely you would see a drop in oil. I was looking at other post on adding oil and stuff at 2k miles so I was like wow thats crazy that I have to monitor it to some respect to ensure oil is good. I guess the whole not having a dipstick though makes it tough cause you have to wait for the car to tell you to add it correct? I'm new to BMW so looking for all the info I can get prior to ordering the E90...

14k miles and the bar is still at 75%. 3 track days and a lot of highway driving.

I'm going to be topping my oil off if level drops below full. But yes, if you want to wait until the system tells you to add oil or risk engine damage, that's up to you. System also tells you to change oil every 15K miles, and very few here follow that . It's not a bible. Take care.

I've got over 6k and oil level hasn't changed. I followed breakin but I don't baby it now. I give it WOT and close to redline a couple times a week at least. It's my every day drive and it's been on a couple long road trips and still not a drop used (indicated anyway). Track day coming up in a couple of weeks, so we'll see then, but I plan on changing the oil right after that anyway.

Have 4500 miles now and just noticed my oil droped by 1 bar, it's now at the middle of the indicator. I've hit redline quite often for the past few days, maybe that's why. I followed break in exactly.
