Well, of course the dealership will want to make money off you. They usually offer you less than what they'll sell it for.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just repaint the car? |

Are you serious? A quality repaint probably gonna run close to half of what the car is costing right now ($5000-$10000).

Depends what your definition of trying to make money on you. They're either going to give you a very low trade in value and give you a fairly decent price on the new car or they're going to give you a high trade in value and rip you off on the new car.
You pick. |

In all honesty, I don't think the dealership will cut the OP a great deal.
1. 2006 325i = 4D sedan pre-LCI 2. slumping economy (whether it's true or used as an excuse) 3. Canadian Black Book would put it at around $21k CAD for the low (assuming 20,000 km). Using the exchange rate right now and not assuming that the starting prices in the US were much lower than Canadian pricing, that would put it at $17,000 US. If you factor in the fact that American pricing is usually a bit lower (and you would know given you're from Chicago and Vancouver), I think the market low value would be at around $15,000 US. Dealerships usually lowball that so the offer will be around $12,000 to $13,000 I would think for the trade in. The high on that car would be around $20,000 US. That's a $7000 difference. 4. Repainting won't cost $10,000 US. I know people who do the repaints for the BMW dealerships and I doubt it'll come even close to $10,000. |

Oooh ok. Yeah I was thinking just body like bumper, hood, doors, etc. That'll probably run $5000 US at the max but more likely less (usually cheaper to do the whole thing at once because they need to mix the paint and reserve the bay). It's really just masking, sanding, and spray. Yeah to actually change the whole thing by gutting it will be $10,000 which is not worth it. If I had to do that, I'd change way more than just the color. But if OP is just tired of the outside color, I would think repaint on the outside body would still be cheaper. Truth is, dealerships make money on trade-ins and they'll make a lot. The rationale behind their logic is that they need to spend time to clean and detail it as well as doing the inspections. Then they need to mark it up too to make a profit for admin fees, etc. With the economy the way it is (or at least what people think), I think dealerships will try to squeeze the trade-in value. They'll reason that it'll be hard for you to sell it on the open market and no one will want it so you're best to trade it in. Been having my own problems with my fiancee's Jeep because of that reason too. To the OP, best bet if you want to trade-in is to post it up on AutoTrader and the local papers to see if anyone will buy it off you for cash. Bring it in for a good detail or do it yourself and you'll get better offers than without the detail. Honestly, I don't have much faith that the dealership will give you a good deal on the trade-in (or as another poster said, they'll get you on the trade-in or the new car). |
