xiT Rear window shatter
Sorry to say, but this is my first post.
Was wondering if any xiT owners have had problems with the rear window shattering from heat. Woke up to find out that there was a hole the shape of a baseball bat in the rear window, yet nothing was taken. So, initially, I was thinking that someone decided to be an a$$hole and just have fun at my expense. I found out from a neighbor that as they were first passing by (around 6:15am), the car looked fine. Then, when I found out about it (around 6:40am), there was that hole in the window. And just now, a family member informed me that they saw a small hole and that the edges of the window were broken. Then the rest of it had broken off, to form the shape of a baseball bat (yes, wonder twins unite! :P). So, it got me thinking (plus the police officer mentioned), that the glass may have just broken from climate issues. Right now, it's about 71 degrees. And for the past week, we've been going through a heat wave in the 90s with a lot of humidity. Anyone else have a window shatter problem with there xiT? Now, just have to wait til Monday or Tuesday for a claims agent to contact me. So, no car meets for me, til I get this sh!t fixed. ;P

Toronto had seen some of the worst hot weather conditions ever. The humidex reached record high of 42'C which is over 105'F. Its always a good idea to leave your window slightly open to allow the heat to escape.

Damn. Sorry to hear about that. I really doubt it was heat. It's been just as hot here in Delaware and I haven't seen any spontaneous window blow outs (in my XiT or otherwise). Most likely vandalism. Besides, there is no way it was hot enough before 7 AM. And humidity is moisture - humidity can't break a window, just fog it.
Best of luck with the repair. Tell that cop to do what he does best and hand him a donut. He's obviously an idiot.

I think only the front windshield would not shatter like that. What's interesting is that the part just hanging in the wiper hanging in the middle of the pic is with the window up. There doesn't seem to be any support, other than the window itself to make the upper half of the door stronger. I wonder if the 5 series is the same way.

Heat? Tell me about it! 118 in Phx yesterday, shattered the all-time record for the day.
When it's very hot, you MUST crack a window to prevent this, though the chances are small of it happening. I *always* crack my driver's window about 1/4 inch during the summer. (Potential) problem solved.

I've seen something similar happen when I worked at a VW dealership. We had a car that had been transferred from another dealership, and in was parker partially under the service bay. In other words, half of the rear glass was in direct sunlight, and the other was in the shade. All of a sudden, the glass just shattered. Hate that it happened, but the rear glass is much easier to replace than the front one.

Yowza! That sucks.
It's been record breaking heat here in LA for the last few weeks and I'm happy to say that my xiT rear window hasn't exploded yet! *knock on wood* What's going on with this heat BTW? Total global warming. Glass is a weird thing. It doesn't usually show any signs of stress at all just before it's about to fall apart.

there were a few instances of this occuring on the A4 Avants. The way it was explained was that the rear glass was almost pressure fitted and any slight deviation causes stress on the glass causing it to just simply shatter.
