Service / Warranty Query

Guys,

I have just checked my service computer which shows oil change at 17000 miles, 02/2011. Does this mean whichever is the soonest?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The other part of my thread concerns the warranty. If am of the understanding that due to EU legislation, as long as my vehicle is serviced in accordance with manufacturers specification & BMW genuine parts are used & recorded, I could take my vehicle to any BMW specialist garage (ie a non stealer). I was acutely aware before I bought the car that I wasn't going to be cheap, but I just don't like to be ripped off when I could go somewhere else for considerably less.

Has anyone took the plunge & done this?

My main concern is BMW trying to wriggle their way out of a warranty issue if I went to a non stealer garage & some major/costly fault developed.

Thanks in anticipation.

If you mean the warranty provided with a new car then yes, you can have it serviced anywhere as long as it is to the manufacturer's schedule without affecting warranty.

My local BMW dealer is doing a "match the local indy pricing"...its probably only a consequence of the economy and I can't say I have yet tested it yet but gives another angle to explore. The other thing to factor in is that you are more likely to get a BMW dealer to be "on your side" if/when a warranty issue comes up if you also use them for servicing during warranty. This worked in my favour when my local dealer supported a claim for me on premature wear of the driver seat leather.

of course, once that warranty expires....game on!

You'll find that mileage number dialing down as you put on miles, perhaps at a quicker rate than your actual mileage - depending on the driving style and usage habits. If you're mostly a long motorway runner, it may even dial up.

The 02/2011 looks like it might be referring to the 2-year recommended change for brake fluid (I'm assuming your car is an early 09?)

Keep the following in check to preserve your warranty validity:
Conform to CBS (Condition-based servicing, i.e the computer indicators)
Genuine BMW parts

Excuse if I come across patronising, but be careful of whos hands you let anywhere near these cars. I'm speaking from experience when I say that not everyone understands how complex these machines are and can put you into a right pickle. Be wise and be paitient with your selection.

I say this because our E36 was serviced outside of stealer circles and had the oil-sump cracked from an over-tightened bolt. While they acknowledged the mistake and made ammends (ordered replacement, courtesy car etc), it was a great inconvenience and leaves you with a feeling that another garage could well have let you be on your way and discover the oil drips later.

Also, keep in mind that not everybody has the latest equipment to reset service indicators - you might wind up at BMW stealerships either way.
No offence taken at all bud. Actually a sigh of relief really as I've got an expensive few months coming up!

The car is registered September 2007 with 14700 miles.

The 335 is an awesome vehicle & by far the best car i've ever had but at the expense of my pocket!!

My friend has lent me his Aston Martin DB9 a few times for weekends away with the lady, but I have to say I equally enjoy driving the BMW just as much. I think it is because the Aston attracts too much attention. It just gets tiresome after a while people staring at you & I guess judging you.

Thanks for the advice guys & may I add this is a great forum

Oooh, I guess I should at least post a piccy of the Aston!!

Then you have to use the dealer network as they can specify whatever terms & conditions they like.

Each variable service function has both a mileage AND latest date applicable to them.

So it's saying oil change in 17000, or by 02/11 whichever comes first.

BTW you can service it where you like and you don't absolutely have to use BMW parts, only parts 'which comply with the manufacturers specification', in reality this may mean BMW parts, but the law doesn't make it mandatory. Like belts and filters etc you can often get 3rd party compliant products.

The problem is when you come to sell it withouth Full BMW Dealer history, the drop in value will probably be more that you saved by doing it on the cheap.
