my key is messed up.

so for the last 2 hours i have been trying to figure out why the hell my lock button on my key will not work. the unlock and the trunk work fine, but the lock button will do nothing. it worked this morning, and now its dead.

in the owners manual it says if only the lock button fails the battery in the key is low, and it needs to be charged by being put in the ignition and driven for an extended period of time... well i tried that (About 45 minutes) and still nothing.

of course no one in service knows what the hell i am talking about, and says ahhhh we can get you in next week...
lame.

so when i get home i will have to try the second key and see if that one actually works.

anyone else have this issue?

Does the other fob work? By chance is the other fob in the car?

My key stopped working a while back (none of the buttons would work). Thankfully, I was still able to get into the car by using the slide-out metal key. Amazingly, the car still recognized the fob when it was inserted into the slot. I also tried driving around for the key to charge, and no change.

This could have been a huge disaster as I was about 400 miles away from home across the border in Canada during the weekend. It was the one time I used BMW assist, only to find out that no dealers were open.

When I got back home, the dealer had to order a replacement. They said that the electronics inside the key had gone bad.

Not amazing at all.. that's RFID technology at work and it does not require any power at all, the RFID chip is "powered" by the signal the car is sending to it.
