reduced 1200 mile service??

I took my car for the 1,200 mile service today, expecting engine, diff, and transmission oil change since I got a 6MT.
The service supervisor told me "they reduced the 1,200 miles service, they olny do engine oil change now" The rest is not needed, he said!!

What is the real situation with the service?? Is it really changed??

Thanks

Ask them, when was this changed? Confirm with other dealers and/or BMWNA about this change.

Yeh, I called BMWNA gave them VIN etc. they are looking into this.
My feeling, this is BS from the dealer.

Yes, your dealer is incorrect.

I just had the 1200 mi. service, and engine, transmission, and differential oil were all changed, or at least that is what appeared on the service order. I asked the service manager, and he said BMW has not changed the 1200 mi. service requirements.

Look in the owners manual. It now recommends that the trans. fluid not be changed, as well as the diff. I believe. I just had mine a couple of weeks ago and I had the motor oil, microfilters (by request) and engine filter changed.
EDIT: This is a change for MY09...

Well, I have a 6MT, I thought they omited the trans fluid change on the DCT cars only!

You are correct - only the DCT does not have a fluid change. The following excerpt is taken from BMW Service Information Bulletin SI B 00 04 08 - New Vehicle Prep & Maintenance dated APRIL 2009. Tell your dealer to look it up.

M3

Reminder for operations needed at the 1200 Mile Service:
  • Replace the engine oil and oil filter
  • Replace the transmission oil on the standard-equipment 6-speed manual unit.
  • Note: The optional M DCT Drivelogic transmission has a long-term rated oil DCTF-1, which requires no replacement unless specified for a repair.
  • Remove and clean the transmission filter on the standard-equipment 6-speed manual unit
  • Replace the differential oil
Repeat these maintenance operations at every 3rd Engine Oil Service.

Note: For M3, M5 and M6 the 1200 Mile Service is counted as the "first" engine oil service. The engine oil nominal interval is approx. 15,000 miles (can vary per CBS). Therefore, the second time the engine oil needs to be changed would be when the vehicle reaches approx. 16,200 mi (1200 + 15,000) mi. Using the same nominal interval, the third oil service would be due at approx. 31,200 mi (actual miles based on CBS). That would coincide with the "Vehicle Check" maintenance operation.

No other models require the 1200 Mile Service. Therefore, all non-M models (except 335d) would need their first engine oil service at approx. 15,000 mi.

Note: The M3's engine air intake filter does NOT need to be replaced at the 1200 Mile Service. Its first scheduled change is at the Engine Oil Service occurring at approx. 16,200 miles, then only required at every other Engine Oil Service thereafter (i.e. at approx. 46,200 mi.).

yea.. there was a local dealer who said they'd only change engine oil and filter and "inspect" transmission and differential fluids.
just call around and go to a dealer that will change out all fluids.
but if you already got it serviced at the dealer, you are stuck with them until they perform it since they are the only one "entitled" to bill BMW for the 1200 service since they started it.

I picked up my DCT coupe last week at the delivery center in Greenville, SC and drove it cross country with my son. Ahead of time I calculated that the service would have to be done around the time we got to Texas so I phoned the dealer in Amarillo and scheduled an appointment.

Only after we waited two hours did they tell me that they were only able to change the engine oil and filter as they did not have the correct diff oil in stock. Even though I had made the appointment a month in advance. They told me to just deal with it once I got back to California and also said that they couldn't reset the service indicator until the service was completed. So my car would show that I didn't do the first service until 3,000 miles!?! WTF?

We hit the road and I phoned ahead to the dealer in Albuquerque. The service advisor I spoke with, Joseph, confirmed that they had the correct fluid and made sure they could fit me in while we waited for the car. He said they had to do some calling back and forth to determine how they would file the claim but didn't trouble me with any of the details.

Moral of the story: don't expect the same level of knowledge or professionalism from each dealer. Unless you live in Albuquerque. Thank you, Joseph and Sandia BMW!

After calling BMWNA, and here I have to praise them, my local dealer did change engine, differential, and trans. oils. BMWNA gave them a call, and they called me back too.
They provided excellent service.
So there is NO change regarding the 1,200 miles service!!

I had to fight my dealer too to get all that done too, but after showing them the manual, they did it Tuesday. Wish I had found this forum before my appointment, to make sure they put the right oils, as it was reported some dealers putting tranny fluid in the differential. What I don't quite understand is why the air filter is called out on the manual, but it was replaced as well (invoice calls it 'microfilter')... unless it's something else. Hmmmm.

Anyway, I was surprised when tech told me tranny only holds 2 quarts, and differential 1.1 or so. I was expecting about twice as much on both, but at least the tranny has a cooler and filter; nice.

Finally, my dealer said when I bring the car to 'low mileage oil services' every year they won't reset the system, so they don't have to change tranny and diff every 3rd change. That's crap, no? You don't want those oils more than 3 years in there, no? Might have to fight that as well. Comments welcome.

I believe "microfilter" refers to the interior cabin air filter. It was initially called for to be changed, but I believe BMW late dropped that, since int make no sense to change after just 1,200 miles.
