Thanks a lot

Installation isn't that difficult, right? How much do you think it will cost at some average auto shop???

I'm asking b/c, for the first time, today I left my M at an auto shop. They are supposed to fix the dent in my lower bumper that happened to me at a local car wash (the car wash is paying for it). If they do a good job, I'll order the skip plates

How many would recommend these skid plates and do they fit both the coupes and roadsters? Seems like a good idea...

You just need a 8mm socket to install the plates. Remove the two factory bolts, fit the plates, adjust, bolt everything up.

Highly recommended.

If it's that easy, I'll probably do it myself!

So, do you fit the plates to the very edge of the bumper, or the bolts will show you where it's supposed to be?

Sounded good enough that I ordered a set. They are configured for both models (as we would assume since they have the same undercarriage). I would also like to add the clear bra to keep the front end as clean as possible. Maybe next month after my contribution to US treasury.

It takes at least one curb to figure out the safe parking distance!!!

thanks to nmulax for the link

Plates went on fine tonight. Getting the car lifted was the tough part. I had hoped they would habe been slightly bent up (rounded) along the leading edge but this will do. The center spoiler could also use a strip....

Getting the car lifted? You can easily reach the screws with the car on the ground... I did it in 5 minutes in my garage.

I heard the skid plates are worthless as they don't sit flush against the underside of the bumper.

The skid plates do lay flat on the car or else they would plain out break off.

Their main design is to take the scrapes the body of your car would anyway. You can drive slow around every bump but you won't be able to avoid all of them.

I've often wondered why RPI didn't offer a counter-sunk hole for flush-mount fasteners for their customers instead of having them rely on the very protruded OEM bolts ?

Also..a slight 90 degree bend as a leading edge would have been using some product foresight.

The customer can always re-spray with paint as needed to keep cosmetically nice.

What kind of paint should I use if want to "refresh" my plates a bit? Better, where can I have the plates made in delrin (most motorcycle frame sliders are made of delrin)

SEM brand semi-flat trim paint works great.

There are a few types of Delrin....some white, some blk but I believe its called something else..slips my mind.
A piece of Delrin would slide fine over concrete or asphalt...but would also allow a faster cut-in that could eat away at the fasteners.

I've got a thin sheet of Titanium back at the Lab...I should make some from that so I can freak others out when scraping at the track with the pretty colored sparks that will fly !!

Tip on appearance of skip plates

I like the plates, but the powder-coating on them is thin and fragile. The plates are bright aluminum underneath. My alignment guy bent one plate pulling onto his lift, so I bought a second pair and use the remaining good one as a spare. The plates are symmetrical and fit either side of the car by turning them over.

I found that the cheap door-edge molding in black sticks nicely over the front edge of the skid plates and usually prevents taking off the black powder-coating in the event of a scrape. It's nearly invisible and it's easier/cheaper to replace the molding than repainting the skid plates every time it happens.

Overall I recommend the plates - much cheaper than a new bumper.
