can you prevent brake dust?

Is there a way to prevent brake dust on your Rims???
It appears that most of the BMWs I see are covered with brake dust compared to other cars.
Get different brake pads?

Yes, different pads. Offhand I think some of the pagids are relatively dust free, but check out the autoparts websites because I do not remember clearly. As with most everything, there are tradeoffs... Performance or looks?

New pads... check that out -> http://www.bimmerworld.com/Projects/E90project_pads.htm

or my coworker was debating... maybe trying a coat of wax on your rims, and you can more easily dust off the brake dust. I don't know, it's worth a try I suppose.

As wierd as this may sound...the brake dust make my SG look better ! When clean, the alloy wheels are too "bright" for the sg...

Haha oh noes, you beat me!

Actually, I hear that if you get bigger brake pads, it increases the surface area and will allow you to generate less dust.

Some people say wax the rims. Seems that would take about 100 times longer to do than cleaning them. German brakes are notorious for lots of dust. I clean mine with Simple Green - spray onto wet wheel full strength and clean with a brush. Works great and isn't some nasty acid or chemical. Great for the tires too.

Instead of waxing them, you should protect your wheels with a polymer sealant (ie. Zaino, Klasse, Poorboy's EX-P, etc)...Caranuba based waxes have a low melting point, and since the wheels are exposed to the extreme heat of brakes and the engine, you need a protectant that can handle the high heat environment.

My routine for my cars is to seal the wheels with a polymer sealant and maintain them with a california car duster. Get the one for the dashboard and a quick swipe every few days will remove the brake dust and make them look like you just wash them.

Apparently the california dash duster works well on wheels...I'm gonna be trying it from this weekend!

Yup...it works really well! I'm not a fan of it on paint (streaks, lint, and fear of scratches), but the smaller size ones are awesome for wheels.

If you seal and protect your wheels, it's works even better. Looks like you just washed your wheels everytime you use it.

I had the Porterfield pads on my X5 and E39 M5...If anyone is deciding to get those, wait for the proper rear size. The clicking everytime you brake is really irritating. But your wheels will stay almost dust free after a week of driving.
