Is xDrive essential/useful in Long Island?

it all depends, If you drive a lot in snow storms (meaning your not a pussy and stay inside and call out of work) then yes! X drive is useful

My 328i is a beast in the snow with snow tires. If you buy snow tires you'll be fine, and you don't have to worry about your car being at 4x4 height all the time, plus it's just extra un needed weight in nice weather. I'd only consider xi in areas that have heavy snow all winter, we get 2-4 snow storms a year at most.

Any thing is better than a rear wheel drive BMW in the snow, so I recommend the X. Picture this, getting ready to pick up your girl for her company Xmas party all dressed up in a suit and you get stuck in the snow, lets just say thats what I have to deal with.

Here's a response without all the snide remarks and cutesie comments:

When I bought my E92 in 2007, I did not choose xDrive because it was not necessary for me drive in snowy weather. OTOH, I also didn't get ZSP because I didn't want to do a winter tire changeover which is required for driving in freezing temps if you have performance tires.

Well, circumstance's changed and this winter I needed to drive when it snowed and other than having a problem getting up my inclined driveway, I think RWD w/AS fared relatively well. The fact that I drive MT also contributed to the handling characteristics as well as my knowledge of how to drive in the snow.

As you can see from my sig, my wife's E90 will have xDrive because she too is required to drive when it snows and she would feel more confident with AWD over RWD. BTW, she has only FWD now.

Bottom line, only you know what your driving capabilities are in the snow. Is xDrive better in the snow? Yes. Is it required for the snow on Long Island? No.
