question for 5 series owners

i own an e90 right now but i have an 86' 535i, which i still have and is in mint condition. I was wondering if someone could answer y my 535 ( other then it being over 20 years old) has alot less power then todays 535.

my 86' 535 is a 3.5l v6 and the manul says it puts out 185hp..i understand the e60 535 is a turbo but shouldnt mine have put out more power then 185hp?

my only guesses are
obviosly engineering has improved in the past 20 years lol
and the car weighs like 4500lbs

but could both those factors take away 115hp

thanks for the help guys
