Question re installation of coilovers vs springs/shocks

I've seen it mentioned on the forums that the installation of coilovers is a lot more involved than the installation of springs/shocks, ie, coilovers require gutting the trunk, etc. If this is actually true, could someone explain why? My understanding (which admittedly is somewhat basic) is that coilovers are essentially a spring/shock combo, but still need to be attached at the same place where a new set of shocks/springs would be attached.

Thanks in advance for the help.
