E92 335d Pressure converter problem...

Hi everyone...

I have a 335d coupe and had a pressure converter problem 3 times in 20 months. While driving the bigger one of the turbos stops working. When I first had the problem back in August 2007, my car was only two months old (about 5.000 km). BMW service checked the car and couldn't find the reason at first. They asked Germany what to do and then changed the pressure converter. The motor worked fine for another 5-6 months. Then again I lost the bigger turbo while driving on highway. They changed the pressure converter again. After about 10 months I had the same problem again and the service changed the same converter again.

BMW Turkey says no one else had the same problem here in Turkey. I refused to take the car back and told them to change the car and waiting for their response now. I also think to contact BMW Germany since I am absolutely not satisfied how they handle my case here. Have anyone else experienced any problem with the pressure converter? Can anyone say what should I do or whom should I contact?

Sad story mate. I had absolutely zero problems with mine in the year I owned one, so unfortunately I can't be much of help.

Isn't there a lemon policy in Turkey? Meaning if you consistently get the same breakdown they replace the car?

Yes, there is. But they want me to pay the difference and I do not want to pay anything in such a bad economic situation. Thinking that I paid 94.000 Euro for a lemon makes me mad. I also think that the same will happen with any other 335 diesel I will drive. It is maybe because of my driving style or something else but I am pretty sure there is a weak spot in that motor and I found it.

Except that problem I absolutely love my car and think it is the best of both worlds, performance and economy in a really beautiful package.

Paying the economic difference is a joke.. is that even legal? If the dealership consistently are unable to fix your problems there must be legal actions you can take to alleviate the situation.

I think it's pretty clear the dealership are fixing the wrong thing. This has happend to me several times before where they'd rather keep trying to fix the wrong thing rather than figure out what's really going on. As an example I had the active cruise control in my old e91 fixed 3 times where they completely refitted the cruise control sensor. Neither of those 3 times fixed it. I took it to a different dealership and they fixed the problem in one hour without refitting anything. Maybe you should get a second opinion?

Edit: Driving style may be causing the problem, but that doesn't change that it's not your problem. How can you expect to buy a higher-end sports car that breaks if you push the throttle?

Thanx for your comments mate. I think you are right: rather than trying to find the real reason it is easier for them to change the pressure converter each time. They told me that the converter is looking absolutely normal but just doesn't work and they do not know why...

I will learn this week what they will offer me. If I will be not satisfied I will contact Germany through a BMW dealership in Köln.

Don't listen to their bullshit and only accept the right solution for you which is a fully functional car with the problem fixed, or a new car!

I will go and get my car back today since I need a car on these cold days.

But I will keep pushing them. I think to ask for a new engine and at least 4 years guarantee on that one. That's quiet reasonable I think...

Clearly that's fair.

Fixing (in fact NOT fixing) the same problem within 20 months is unacceptable.

The same problem occured for the fourth time. I contacted a lawyer and we sent a warning letter to BMW Turkey and demanded the change of the car. Now we are waiting their answers. If they will not change the car I will go to court and demand the change. My lawyer said it can take up to one year but we will win it anyway...

"I called my problem "pressure converter" just because I didn't know its technical name. We signed an agreement with BMW. They made a big discount for my brother on Range Rover 3.6 HSE TDV8 (same distributor here in Turkey). Instead of the list price of 150K Euro, we paid 125K and the case is closed. It is maybe not much and I still feel very frustrated of the way they handled my case and think that there is not everything proper with the motor but I didn't like the feeling of dealing with lawyers and the courts.

By the way, they stopped importing 335d's to Turkey. Interesting...

Chetuo, what are the temperatures you experience in Turkey? I can't really see even being 10 or 15 degrees hotter than other areas to be a legitimate cause for such a problem. After all, there are 335d's operating without problems in Dubai and other hot locations. This seems like a failure of BMW Turkey to fix the problem properly. Good that your brother got a discount, but what about your situation to fix the car?

Problem with 335d

I am in South Texas and gets quite hot up here in the summer months.
Never had a problem with my car except that they had to replace the tail lamps on both sides and once I had a check engine light.
Mine is a 2009 and I change out the engine oil every 4000 miles myself.
Hope this problem with 335d was an isolated case.
I do know that when a sales person is trying to sell you a new car, they try to sell you on the performance by pushing the engine at high rpms and this
engine needs to broken in slow. I contacted BMW and they made a note of this in my file in case, my car experiences any problems in future.
