Post 100% OEM parts M5 SMG shift knob wiring kit thread: wiring kit for everyone!

Well, everyone, meaning steptronic owners that is.

I think we all agree that the illuminated M5 shift knob is very cool. Now I'm hoping that we can build an all-OEM kit that everyone can make for themselves. I'm sure with everyone's help we can do this.

I'm 99.99% sure I currently have, in my possesion, all the OEM parts needed to build a 100% OEM wiring kit. I realize I'm not technical enough to figure out the wiring so I'll be soliciting everyone's help to do this.

here's a hint. I did this with my tinkering of my DCT/650 knob. I removed the shiftplate and had to test out those connections. I can post what I came up with when I tested it with a 9v battery.

Yes, if you could post some specific details on the connections.

Under the shiftplate there are 3 wiring connections:
  1. Cigarette lighter connector (3 male pins, 3 female pins)
  2. white connector (4 pins), and
  3. blue connector (6 pins)

Now the shift knob has 6 pins and we need to find out how those 6 pins are wired to the 3 connectors I mentioned above.

Cool. Thanks.

Btw, if anyone has any info on the pin assignments for those 3 connectors I mentioned above please share it to us.

let me know if you have any questions on how to read it.

Couldn't quite understand it. How do I read it? Also, what is the 9v battery?

9V battery = the rectangular shaped battery you use for your smoke detectors in your home. I used that to test the connections.

so when I touched the black lead(neg) to the white/black wire (white connector) and the red(pos) wire to the #2 pin from the blue connector it lights up the P on the shiftplate.

M5 shift knob pin assignment
1 = Zone Reverse (GND)
2 = Zone Neutral (GND)
3 = Zone Drive A/S (GND)
4 = Night Illumination (GND)
5 = Switched +12v for Night Illumination
6 = Switched/Constant +12v for zone lighting

The table in the word doc is in a strange format but if I read it correctly you can at least determine where the trans positions match up. Then you can figure out where to source your +12 voltage for pins 5 and 6 while its in the vehicle.

Code:
      Pin#                        Pin#   Trans pos
M5    1      -  White Connector    2     R
M5    2      -  White Connector    3     N
M5    3      -  White Connector    4     D
                or
M5    3     -  Blue Connector     4     M/S
Be careful about using a 9V battery to probe around. If the lights are leds you may inadvertently be pushing them into a reverse bias.

I got the pin assignment from the M3/M5 boards. But after seeing phattbam's chart I wasn't so sure if the pin assignments were right as they don't quite match up.

For the power source, we can use the cig lighter connector for that.
