Hatchbacks lighter than coupes?

Was calling around for springs the other day and found out that the hatchbacks are about 300lb lighter than on our coupes. I dont know why that is. Can anyone help. Perhaps there is a way to shed more weight on the coupes?

Doesn't the hatchback have a different engine than the coupe? That could explain part of the difference + counter balance in the rear of the coupe. Not sure what else would contribute to the discrepancy there.

Less metal on it= lesser weight. Put a coupe next to a hatch and you will understand.

Don't worry about the weight, the coupe goes round the corners 'slightly' better..

^ I can think of possibilities off-hand...

The coupes have a better F/R weight distribution? I'd bet most of those 300 lbs come from the rear of the hatch, shifting the overall weight forward.

The 135i comes standard with wider tires than any of the hatches? Nearly all coupe vs hatch comparisons that would make a claim like that will compare the 135i vs the 130i.

50/50 weight distibution, is the coupe better than this?
Tyres (tires) are the same or can be factory or dealer optioned to be the same?

1385 kg - 130 (man) vs 1485 kg - 135 (auto) website does not give figure for manual.

130 has 4 mm more front track width!

Next question?

300lb lighter, 4mm wider track, 50/50 weight distribution and more room for my bike/snowboard, camping.... gear??
I'll take mine with the 123d motor at 55 mpg and a sport package and be done.
The 123d motor with an ecu reflash is 244 hp and like 360 ft pounds!!!!
Here Look!!

Aaaargh!!
So 300 pounds lighter makes it about 500 pounds lighter than a 135i!
so umm I think she'll accelerate and handle just fine.
carbon hood, light forged alloys, lexan the the side and back hatch windows, a light optima battery and some carbon fiber seats....anyone remember the 2002tii touring? there's and orange one ay La jolla independent bmw in san diego. if it recall correctly it has BIG alpina wheels and 02 turbo flares.....

need to find a Military employee stationed in Germany to buy one, and have it shipped back at the Fed expense so we can buy it from him/her!

I don't think you could ship it back since it wouldn't be street legal car in the states. Otherwise, I would do it, but I would never sell it.

I'm trying to account for why some review would claim the coupe is better than the hatch in corners. Since I don't know the Euro hatch by heart I was simply taking guesses as you should be able to tell by the question marks

The only differences I can think off are:
- Weight (Which is in the 130i's favor)
- Weight distribution (130i is apparently ~50:50 while 135i is 52.3:47.7). Perhaps a little extra weight over the front is helping to counter understeer? (I don't have enough good track experience to know the answer)
- Tires (all 135i's have 215F/245R. From what I can find on BMW UK's page all M-sport 130i's have 215F/225R and non-M-sport variants have 205's on all 4 corners.). I could easily see a magazine compare a non-sport 123d that has 205's to a 135i and then make some comment about the 135i having more grip. Yes, you can get the same width tires on either version but we aren't talking about you.
- What brand & model tires come from the factory on Euro hatches? This can make a huge difference in grip even on the same size tires.

That's exactly what I want. Don't forget Sunroof delete.

Diesel prices have dropped back down to the price of premium for now, so at least for now it wouldn't cost more per gallon for 123d fuel as 135i fuel.

Maybe the coupe has a stiffer bodyshell than the hatch due to it having a rear bulkhead. This always helps handling as it allows the suspension to work better.
