Going from a 3 series to a 1 series?
Have any of you gone from a 3 series to a 1 series? Have you regretted it?
I know going from a 3 to a 1 will lose some luxury, but it's still a BMW. I'm actually contemplating about purchasing a 135i. I currently own a 2008 335xi, but with my recent purchase a 4x4 Jeep I no longer require an AWD 335 and have though about purchasing a 135i to have that RWD fun. Most of my parts will have to be sold off the 335, but the PROcede etc could be transferred over quite easily. I guess what would you do?

I'd go for it. What's not to love - a 135 has all the fun bits of a 335 minus all the practicality (which you don't need anyways). Do it!

I just did this transition actually, went from an E46 to a 135i. I find the 135 to be more than adequate in terms of space and comfort (then again I am a smaller guy). I can have passengers in the back for trips and in fact rode in the back myself for over 3 hours when we picked it up in Munich (yes, I was nice enough to let my buddy drive it ). The car is essentially a zippier and more tossable 3 series that I find to be much more manageable than the larger cars. I personally think the 3 series has become a bit bloated and too large of a car for its size.

why not look for a slightly used 335i, less depreciation hit for you and all ur parts will work?

The biggest difference between the 1 and the 3 is the lack of stuff for rear seat passengers. In the 1 you get 2 seats that have pretty good room considering the car. Its just enough room to keep an average sized adult (no fat chicks lol) from complaining. But there is nothing else back there, no arm rest or cup holders.
Also if you get sport package you will have an awesome wheel and shifter that doesn't come on any other BMW M or not. That's mostly it. When I dove a 335 sedan I kept feeling like I was a chauffeur. The back seats were nicer than the front!

Sometimes it is easier to just buy new and order what you want.

Oh are you looking for the 2009 iDrive in your next car? If so it is far far better than the previous version. That may dissuade you further from buying used. In the 09 voice command works on a near flawless basis. In 08 I found it useless.

Yeah, the 1er has no hood insulation, doors make a bit dingier noise when you close them and plastics could feel 'bit' cheaper but overall it's the same car, same switches, it is riding on the same platform actually. Or rather 3er is riding on same platform as 1er. You will get though a more nimble car, in dimensions similar to E46 and it's lighter and more 'chuckable' around corners... I had it for a loaner.. here's some pics. Nothing special, 118i, but peppy even with automatic. I thought it was fun, but there is no room in the back, i didn't even try to sit there myself for a test.

The 135i is an incredibly desirable car IMO. I really like the interior and don't think it gives up much at all to the 3, other than exterior looks, where the 3 absolutely trounces it.

what you are losing going from the 335i to the 135i:
1) looks. the e92 is just a nicer looking car from the exterior, period. 2) highway driving dynamics. The 3er drives more comfortably (see cons below)... it's bigger cruiser. what you are gaining going from the 335i to the 135i: 1) more sporty, nimble, slightly faster driving experience. The "perceived" feel when driving them back to back, is that the 135i is just the sportier and funner car. 2) $$... of course going used to new, this is void, but comparably equiped, the 6k difference is substantial 3) nicer/more driver oriented interior. The interior layout, with the slight angle towards the driver, is a great look. The accents, such as the perforated and thick M-steering wheel, the shorter and smaller throw M-shifter + M-shift knob, etc, just complement the sporty race-like feel of this car. As I've mentioned before, back in May, I was all dead set in buying the 335i when I went to the dealer....they had a 335i + SP, and a 135i + SP, both manual. All it took was a test drive back to back, and the rest is history...it wasn't even close in terms of feel and fun.

I guess I'll have to call my SA and see what they'll give me for my 335xi before moving forward. Selling used cars right now is hard task it seems.

I'm seriously considering just 2 cars to replace my 335i this summer: a 135i or E90 M3. The 135i would get about $7k in modifications (wheels, suspension, interior, power, exhaust etc.) and the M3 would stay bone stock.
There is a $10k price difference between the two, even considering the modifications on the 1, so I am not sure which car I'll end up with. But for me personally, there is absolutely no advantage to getting a 335i instead of a 135i. The 1 is just more fun all things considered and the $5-6k difference can account for a lot of mods. |

No doubt my 135i would get a grip of mods asap. The procede, forge dv's, and bms dci would be applied instantly. Shortly after some wheels, exhaust, downpipes, springs/suspension and of course some tint

How can you buy such an ugly car as the 1-series ? Don't even think about it. Do you want to give the money to BMW and make them think that they can still sell such a hideous looking car ? If you do so, the next 1-series will be as ugly as this one.

I personally think the 1 looks better than the e90 but each to his own. If were to get a 3 series it has to be the E92. The door won't feel lighter on the coupe because its size compare to the 4 door.

ok based on paper facts and the awesome drive of the 1er, i'd say go for it. although personally i wouldnt because i think a 335 coupe looks so much than the 135 coupe... the 1er is just a little odd looking to me. perhaps if it looked more like a vw sirocco, i would say go for the 1
