Blue Ridge Parkway recommendations please
Hi all. I have never driven the Blue Ridge, but am planning on driving it after performance center delivery the first week in December. A couple of questions...
1) Am I crazy to drive the parkway at this time of year? Will it be icy? 2) I was planning on starting by Asheville, NC and heading north till @ Blowing Rock, have I missed anything? Hit the good parts? Do I need to see the southern section I will skip section? or anything farther north. Time wise the full 400 or so total miles is a little much with how slow I expect it to be. Thanks for your advice in advance guys. :respekt:

Blue Ridge
Junkie,
I am heading that way tomorrow. During my research I discovered a large section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is closed just north of Asheville. I have mapped out some detours that appear to be great roads for enjoying the 1. I will update after my return. Here is what the Nation Park Service posted.http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm |

We were up there the weekend before last and the leaves were just beginning to change. Should still be able to see some color.
The speed limit on the parkway is 45 and the rangers love to hand out tickets. I would highly recommend highway 181 out of Morganton, NC. Lightly traveled some nice sweepers and a few rather tight turns. Enjoy the trip. |

Junkie,
Don't have much to report. My time in Asheville was short and an early snow had the parkway closed down even more than the posted spots. Cold tires, snow and steep drop offs kept me cautious. Most of my detours were based on roads off of the parkway before the closures, so I was unable to try them either. On the few roads I was able to find after it warmed up I had a blast. Hopefully when you go you will have better weather. FYI. There is a symbol/warning light not listed in the owners manual that may appear for you when you go up there. It is a snowflake in a triangle. Others have posted on it but i had not read them. It is BMW's way of warning you that the roads could be icy. Enjoy the ride. |

I live on the parkway in Ashe county North Carolina... If you get up this far give me a shout.... The area up hereis very nice and we have not had any snow yet...
I am the only 135i on the top of the mountains so it would be nice to see another one drive by....

The town is west jefferson if you want to google it..... About an hour from Blowing rock.... On your way to blowing rock you will go by gandfather mountain... You may want to stop there to check out the views... You can see for hundereds of miles.... After grandfather mountain you will drive on the viaduct (spelled something like that), its like a long land bridge... Funn drive....
