What is faster... 135i or 350z turbo??
My mate has a 2003 Nissan 350z with Automatic transmission. It's basically stock and he has plans to put a t'netics single turbo on it for a bit of extra speed.
Does anybody have any idea of how fast it will be and how it will compare to my 135i when it arrives? Anyone know what kind of 0-100, 1/4 times it will produce? I basically want to know which car will be faster. Any info would be great. |

Very dependent on what kind of set-up he runs with the turbo and what else he does to the car. Generally speaking, turboed 350zs are very quick if driven correctly. I would say, in general, again, this is very dependent on what exactly he does to the car, his car would be quicker.

Errr. Dumb topic.
Your mates 'turbo'd 350z could have 500 hp or 400hp or 1000hp. You're clutching at straws. The 135i times are well documented in all the australian car magazines, including drive & carpoint. Then theres the driver variances. |

BMW86, I only have a 128i, with the sport and prm package/automatic w/paddle shift, no mods or upgrades. The best 0-60 time I have gotten is 6.1, but motor trend has gotten a 5.7, now also with the 135 with an extra 70hp behind it it can get roughly a 5.0. now the 2008 350z/v6 has 306hp and a 0-60 time of 5.6 with man and a 6.0 with auto as told by thecarconnection. So I would say the 135 would kill the 2003 350z without the turbo and probably with the turbo as well.

I'm with Kris, you can't get an accurate measure to form a reliable comparison based "my mates going to bolt on a turbo".
Too many variables. |

350z with tubonetics single turbo package should put it at the 350-380whp mark at the peak. I suspect the turbos won't help till after 2500rpm at the earliest and catch on at 3000rpm. Enough to beat a stock 135 i would think. Heres a similar system from APS:

Actually I think your comment doesn't hold a lot of weight. I did many launches of my (auto) 535d at the drag strip and two driver controlled factors - how many revs I'd dial in whilst holding it on the brake, and my choice of DTC on or off or TC totally disabled, made a significant difference to the launch. Getting maximum power and minimum slip relies on more than just assuming the "idiot box" will sort out everything for you.

tell him to be careful with that single turbo, they hit really hard and the z's have blown their engine. TT is actually safer for him, or better yet a supercharger is ideal. in general, making the vq35 into f/i is a pain and a half and takes a lot of $$$, if you do it right anyway. makes more sense to sell the car and get a car with a turbo. that's what i did anyway.

Thanks for your input everyone... I think I'm leaning towards the Zed beating the stock 135i although it's hard to say what sort of modifications the Zed will have specifically.

Thanks for the graph... I didn't realise how much extra gains the Zed will get from the turbo. I think it should be enough power to beat a stock 135i...:iono:

There is nothing wrong with threads like this until people posting become hostile. He's asking a fairly simple question. If you feel there are important variables you can either ask the OP or make some assumptions.

I have the Z that in question and would be keen to get a turbo to better match up with a 135 and for my personal enjoyment. TO clear up turbonetics is out of the question for me as they dont fit onto aussie spec Z's. APS single turbo is my best bet as they are an australian brand. Basicly im keen to put a turbo onto an other wise stock Z. Based on dyno wouldnt it be a good match up against a stock 135? I would assume the 135 is stil going to get me off the line with launch but it should be interesting after that wouldnt you think?
In response to the feed back from mistermojorizin i am not keen to go through with it if its not reliable. I have been doing my research, would u think left stock with a turbo left at 8psi would be fine reliability wise? From my knowlege of what i have read they can handle up to 400whp before things go pear shaped |

You sure that wan't an SC Z, not turbo? In either case I'd say the Z driver was clueless. My last car was a 350, so I'm pretty familiar with the community and the mods. I know one guy (really good driver) that got under 12 seconds with the single TN. Regarding the TN kit, it can put out over 400 rwhp depending on the configuration, but it also has a flaw that will have you overboosting and blowing the motor sooner or later if you do it on a stock block. The Z can make some serious power (500rwhp+) with some of the kits out there, mostly the twin setups with built motors, but the motor build is necessary unless you like looking at shredded aluminum blocks. edited to add: to the OP, a Z with almost any kit out there will be faster than a stock 135i. Even the SC kits can get into the 12's with an upgraded pulley and a decent driver. Add a JB3 and you'll hang with or beat the more modest boosted setups though.
