Clutch problem

Anyone burned out the clutch on a 135i? I was driving home last night, and having a little fun... keeping it within the speed limit of course. suddenly the clutch started to slip on takeoff from lights. I could smell it pretty bad, and then suddenly clutch wont depress anymore. Makes grinding upon trying to depress.........

Waiting for tow now

Did you any stupid thing such as burn out or you burn too much from first gear to second gear?

I think you should go back to the dealership and have them to check the clutch.

Sounds like a bearing or something went out. I don't really know what I am talking about, but I doubt you toasted your clutch that fast.

If you did do something stupid to burn out your clutch. Do not post it. You never know if the dealer will read it and deny your warranty claim.

I also doubt you burned the clutch that quickly, this clutch should be able to handle plenty of spirited driving. but agreed don't discuss any "bad" habits or slip-ups. BMWNA puts a lot of pressure on the Stealers for what they can and can't do.

sorry to steal the thread, but after reading this, all I could think about was this:

LOL

So after nine days of sitting at calgary bmw's outdoor lot, they finally took it apart today to reveal some pretty nasty stuff. For example. No warranty coverage even though i have the extended service pack which covers the clutch.

Current milage:
8000kms(3000kms of which is highway from calgary to victoria in august)

While inspecting the carnage, the technition is quick to tell me that this type of problem would ONLY occur during abuse of the vehicle. I asked the tech what kind of abuse he is referring to. He
says brake stands, clutch drop etc..... I immediatly point to my tires which still have the "nubs" on them......

He doesnt care and basically the tech and service advisor agree that i am liable and should cover the repairs for the car which i took possesion of june 2008.

COST breakdown:
PARTS:
slave cyliner: $120
Clutch Kit: $302
Flywheel: $1328
Misc hardware $72

PARTS: $1822 +
LBR 7.7hrs @ $130 = $1001
TOTAL: $2823 +GST

That is serious wear. Did you ever lend your car to anyone, or valet park it? How many miles did it have on it when you took posession? Unbelievable!

Holy shit.... that's some serious damage..... i dont think you can do all that with a little fun. Did you do any peel outs or money shift?

You can start calling and writing to BMW NA customer relations. Their address and number are in your bmw owners service and warranty guide, pg 24. I just spent the better half of my evening documenting my experience in a 6 page paper, including scans of work order.

Wow, that's one torn up clutch. I had a similar experience with my wifes old Elantra, clutch would go every 20K miles. They tried to claim poor driving, and slipped a few sexist comments. (She grew up in Europe driving manual her entire life, I was certain it wasn't her driving.) They tried to pull some technical mumbo jumbo explaining why it wasn't faulty. I'm not a tech, but I asked to have the regional tech take a look and prepped the complaint documents to Hyundai NA. In the end all worked out, new clutch.

I can see where the service dept might assume you're the cause, esp if your a young man in this hot new BMW. If you're certain you didn't perform any "aggressive stunts," stick with your story and fight. Customer is always right in the end. They will have to prove that you did in fact create this problem.

Techs/Gear Heads....is it possible that the clutch could have been set improperly to cause damage like this?

Bingo!

Someone either learned how to drive a manual on your car, or was just a bad MT driver.

The break in period suggest going light on the clutch....12kms could be enough to set things off in the wrong direction.

Another possibility - someone at the dealer could have swapped out the clutch with a worn out one before delivery. Are there any date stamps on the castings? That clutch looks like it has 100k on it. Get a second opinion from an independant BMW shop.
