DIY Request: Transmission Fluid Change
Really just need to know what size wrench, what fluid to use, and any tips or tricks associated with the 135i 6MT trans. If you can provide any info it would be much appreciated. If you have a complete step by step DIY it would be even better.
Thanks in advance! (will open the box first this time :wink

I gotta ask....why do you want to change the trans fluid?

I don't yet... only at 3500 miles but I'd like to inspect and probably replace at 10k and then every 10k thereafter. From what I've read, it appears that BMW states the fluid is good for life..? Eek! I'm fairly rough on my car and like the assurance (and reduction in notchiness) from changing my fluids regularly.
Who knows though, I might look at the fluid at 10k and thik it looks fine and need to readjust my tentative schedule to every 15k or 20k.

That's WAY overkill. Once every 50k miles would be more than enough. Transmission fluid isn't like engine oil. There's no combustion going on to contaminate it. And there's nothing you're going to see by looking at the fluid that's going to tell you whether it's still good or not. |

you may be right about it being overkill but you certainly don't need combustion in order for it to breakdown. Heat and frequent temp changes (as we have in the PacNW) can break down trans fluid. Same with the differential. Also, you can visually tell if the fluid is sludgy and gritty without it being substantially darker or dirty as you infer.

I am willing to bet the trans fluid is synthetic.

50k is plenty enough of tranny fluid change interval with synthetic. But I know some people love their cars a bit "too" much. And it costs them a lot of money.

I would suspect so...
Regardless, a transmission still gets broken in just like an engine and a differential do (albeit technically different) and I'd like to at minimum inspect the fluid at 10k and replace if I think it is needed. Thereafter may be every 25k or more, I don't know yet. If anyone has a list of tools, fluid, and recommended procedures for the 135's 6MT I would appreciate it.

^^^ thats what i use in my audi TT audi says the same about thier tranny fluid and rear dif fluid...lifetime my ass...after changing the gear oil to redline mtl 75w 90 or royal purple the shifts are much crisper...also you can get metal shavings in the tranny box and as you all know thats not good so changing every 15-20k is what i do. i love how the audi TT have a magnetic drain plug that collects any shavings in the transfer case and tranny..also bought a magnetic engine oil drain plug that is from ecstuning.com who by the way sells BMW goodies...

So...how about that write up? I was looking at our 128 and there is no ATF dipstick so I can't even understand how you would fill the tranny back up...

It is a GM tranny, so you could take it to you local Cadillac dealer for service. It is the same transmission that is used on the CTS.

...never did get any info on the 135i 6MT... All I asked was for directions to my church, but all I got was idiots telling me what they thought about my religion.
I guess I'll go scout e90Post to see if anyone has info for the 335i 6MT.

I plan on doing a trans flush every 25K miles. My dad did this on his Mountaineer and its still pulling strong at 150K miles, with no engine or transmission issues.
PS thats an American truck with an Auto with no repairs other than a 100K tuneup/suspension overhaul. It pays to be overcautious. that being said, I would always ask somebody to do it for me...I dont trust myself with trannies. |

FYI - I spoke with the dealer today (parts guy) to try to order some MTF LT3 fluid for my car. He said that the fluid needs to be changed at a certain temperature to not damage the transmission. WTF? I know draining while warm helps the fluid drain, but I've never heard of this for filling it. Any thoughts?
Also, the fluid is $47/liter. I believe 2 quarts is what we need, so it looks like some measuring is in order.

A wide guess is to prevent thermal shock to the tranny...
our car retains heat so damn well it is stupid. When I change out my exhaust, I notice my tranny is still warm after at least 8hrs of sitting in the garage... |

So, I called back and spoke with the shope foreman this time instead of the parts rat. He said that the temperature sensitivity is only with automatic transmissions, the manuals don't require this.
