If you wanted to mod your car to increase HP, why would you not just buy a 135?

For me (Just me), my 128 has way more HP than I can use, but if I had wanted more.. I would have opted for the 135.

every car feels better when opend up a little. Also some people enjoy na engines. If you like your platform why not make it handel or perform better? 135's are not only more expensive to buy but to insure also. And if your thinking racing having an na engine makes it more competitve for the class it would belong in. So youd be racing somthing like a 350z instead of a twin turbo porshe. (these are not the actual oppenents just an analogy)

Some people have concerns about the reliability/life expectancy of the twin turbo as well.

if you buy a 128 and you "tune" it to the hp of a 135 but u tell nothing to the insurance or whatever then youl still pay for the hp of the 128! BUT if u get involved in an accident and they test your car and they find out! u gonne pay everything just like you were drunk and had an accident

I've never heard of insurance dyno-ing someone's car after a claim... :iono: If that's true, I better call em to get one after my incident! Finally get some real-world 128i numbers.

I doubt they dyno the car, but they're not going to reimburse you for whatever mods you have that they don't know about.

It would still be fun to do some mods to a 128i even if you know it will never be a 12 second daily driver. Some nice modifications can give your car a unique touch and/or enhance the driving experience

Ok, I am putting on the flame suit for this one;

I am almost thinking a 128i might be the way to go for reliability reasons, seem to be lots of problems surfacing around the twin turbo setup. First the fuel pump issue coupled with the return of overheating after an hour or so of heavy track use.

I was thinking about doing a full season of Autocross starting next spring, I am still trying to decide on a car. What I would be worried about is putting it through a full day of hard work in high temps as it is bound to bring out any overheating problems with the FI version.

Sure the 135i may have all that extra power on tap, but really a car that crosses the line every time is better than one that posts DNF's when they put themselves into limp mode.

Anyway, just a though... we are all still buddies right :drinking:

I agree cosmetic and handling mods are great, but the lack of discussion on this section of the forum indicates to me that most folks are plenty happy with the 128

Or there aren't that many aftermarket options availiable for the 128i currently...

Would only be an issue if the modification(or malfuntion of mod) caused the accident. Why would they not pay for an accident if you were rearended and have an intake??????

+1, I have always had a soft spot for NA motors. I should know, I have had plenty of blown ones. NA just sounds freaking mean!! Besides, if everyone thought that way (forced induction) Then there would be no ///M3 5 or 6 :/

Insurance seems to be handled differently in Europe, and since he posted from Belgium, maybe they watch much more closely for modifications there?

As for why someone would go with a modified 128 over a 135, some people just prefer the feel, sound and drive of a naturally-aspirated car over forced induction.

I do like the look of the 135 from the front, but if/when I end up going with a 1er, I'd go 128 with some mild intake/exhaust mods and either a 3.46, 3.64 or 3.73 rear end from diffsonline.com. Mated to the 6-speed that would be a very nice little car for track and street.

Yes, something not as pricey as BMW performance items.

Yes, more power is always better. But this car is a huge upgrade for me so I'm extremely satisfied.

no flame here. I love my 135, but wonder about long term reliability. I have had very good luck with after market Superchargers. if the 128 (N52) does not have the same limitations on fuel pump and fuel injectors, it my end up being the better modding platform long term. I have not researched yet.

My wife wants to get a 128 cabo in the spring . if she does i know I will be playing with it.

i am surprisingly happy with the power and feel of my 128i, but if some more aftermarket stuff comes out i might end up getting it.

but only after the warranty expires in a few years, because it's really not any sort of priority to me, to be honest.
