Track.. Autocross.. Drag strip... what's the most fun?
I've done a few track days and had a lot of fun, but I'm considering taking my car to an autocross and a drag strip as well just to get the full motor sport cross section of experience.
So my question to you guys is... Which do you find to be the most fun? And does anyone here do all 3 on a regular basis? Dan |

I've only done 1/4 mile with various cars including this one. It takes more skill than one would think. Another plus is the wear and tear only last 13 secs or so. I'm sure all are a great time.

All are fun. I would rank them:
Autocross Track Dragstrip You'll learn the most about you as a driver and your car at autocross, plus it's about 1/10th the cost of track time. Track allows you to do ridiculous speeds and get that adrenaline going, as well as learning car control (though nowhere near as much as at autocross). Dragstrip allows you the feel of bigtime racing, spectators, top fuel funny cars and dragsters are in line with you. You don't learn much about the car, but it does take skill to launch well and shift quickly. Again, all are fun.. try each of them and make up your own mind. |

+1. BUT...I would never hit the track in a car before doing several autoxs...in order to learn the limits of the car, you gotta exceed the limits...autox is a safe way to do that. On the track I would never go more than 9/10s...too expensive. I had a mechanical failure (blown master brake cylinder) at the track and put my GTI into the tirewall ...fortunately that was the warmup lap...not at speed. That was an expensive weekend...

I think I'm going to try autox next weekend. I like that it's fairly cheap (~$40) and that I can go with my best friend who doesn't have a track car, but can still go out there, toss around the family Subaru and have fun.
It funny I took my Dad with me to a BMW CCA performance driving school at the track a few weeks back, in his Lotus Elise, and he had a blast. However said he didn't like beating up on his $50K Lotus like that so he just went out and bought a used Miata "Mazdaspeed" for about $15K today that he plans to use exclusively as a track car. Once he gets it ready I'm going to go out there with him in it and see how it feels. If I like it I might consider picking one up myself. Like him, I'd much rather ram a $15K Miata into the wall then my $48K BMW. Dan |
