Spying on my SA when in for service
When I first picked up my car it already had 18 miles on it. Because this is the first car I purchased on my own, I think this is normal. But on the other hand, wtf! can the dealership be doing to get it so high? Joy ride? I picked her up the day after my SA told me she had arrived.
This got me wondering. Every time I take my car to the dealership, I get a free car wash. I'm starting to think my SA takes it for a spin as well. I would cry if I had to leave my car there for repair if needed. So, what's the best way to spy or monitor them? Unethical yes... but taking another man's car for a joy ride is unethical as well. |

I asked about this too.
When I brought in my car for a faulty PDC (happened 2 days after getting the car) I picked it up with an extra 14 km on it. I checked over the car and found nothing wrong. I asked when I came back a week later (had to wait for the part to come in from Germany) He said: The service tech do take it out for a test drive. If it's over 15 km we add gas. Hmmm that's what I was told. He would not tell me if that was the case this time. Not that it mattered as all was ok this time. I do know for a fact that the dealership do show the cars to other perspective buyers. I know cause I was told that I could view a car with an idrive that was in for service. As for test driving I do not have any info. I would be super pissed if they were allowing people to test drive it. Showing it, I would much appreciate a call, and allow me to give permission, which I would do in most cases. EspressoBoy |

There is nothing unethical about spying on a service department. In fact, an investigative journalist would tell you that you have an ethical obligation to find out what this dealership is doing to cars that are in for service.
I've always written the mileage down in a conspicuous place on the paperwork when I drop my cars off.

Mine had 11 on it but really in the grand scheme of things, whats the big deal. Now 50 or 100 then something odd happen.
But 11, maybe the drove it to get gas or took the long way around the dealership parking to get it back to the wash area.

Write down the mileage and take a pic before you get to the dealer. Then do it after you get back from the dealer. Then take all of this info to a manager and say it will be going directly to BMWNA if I don't get........

Some dealerships run things dif. than others. The one I'm dealing with wont let anyone in a car that has been taken. A red 135i convert stick/sport was on the showroom floor, but it was locked and my CA said that its been taken and nobody is allowed in it.

I have owned a fair number of nice cars over the years, and of course have had them in for repair or maintenance.
I always EXPECT the shop to drive my car in order to assess the problem or to ensure the repair has been done correctly. The idea of having them perform service and not drive it for inspection purposes is puzzling to me. |

TrackStick Pro sounds like a good idea. If a person didn't trust their dealership, this just might solve the problem.
So far I am happy with the dealership in this regard. EspressoBoy |

So it's a machine wash? ...not even touchless?

18 miles doesn't seem like too much for a brand new car. The odometer doesn't start when your car gets to the dealership, your car has too get there first.
It has to be driven out of the factory. Around the loading dock, onto the train to the port, then into the holding facility for the port, then onto the ship. Then once its in the states, its driven around the VPC center to do all the things they need to get your car ready to actually go too the dealership. If your lucky your car might have been driven 5-10 miles by then, but it's not unusual for a car to have 20 miles or more on it. Then it gets loaded onto a truck to go out to the dealership. So once there your dealership might have put a few miles on it to make sure the car runs correctly and that everything is working correctly, and they will probably take it to get a tank of gas. I would only really worry if the car you had ordered had more than 30+ miles on it. Now, if you take it in for maintenance and you discover that you have 18 miles NEW on the odometer. Thats a whole different matter. 18 miles on a regular maintenace stop is not regular, and I would have some choice words for the maintenace manager...

WOW, nice. I just know I've had one new car, and I had a family member work at a car dealership and the lowest number I have ever seen on a car was 4 miles... and most were between 8-12.
