You guys left out a key piece of info regarding oil change.
I just changed my oil for the first time today (at 1,526 miles).
I pulled the front end of the car up on the rhino ramps and removed the small door from the underbody panel located below the oil drain plug. When I removed the drain plug hot oil shot straight across at a 30-45 degree angle. The oil shot so far over it went across the door opening and hit the panel on the other side. It created a mess on the top of the panel. The oil drained down hill on the top side of the plastic panels and ended up dripping on the floor from the middle area of the car. The next time I *will* have some sort of deflector plate to keep the oil from making a mess. I poured the old oil back into quart containers and measured 6-1/2 quarts removed. I could've spilled up to 1/2 quart so 7 quarts total capacity sounds about right. This is the biggest mess I've ever had changing oil in a car.

Maybe 10-15 minutes. I plan on cutting a piece of pvc pipe in half to use as a deflector for the next oil change.

Wow that sounds like a pain in the ass. I wonder if it happens to everyone or if it's just something with your car. Anyone else who has changed their oil care to chime in?

Mine shot out some, but not all the way to the other side of the pannel. I had it on a full lift though so that could have made the difference.

Did the same thing on my Z4 when I changed the oil a couple months ago; tremendous mess. I haven't thought of a good solution yet for when I change the oil on my 135i. I'll need a solution soon, though; break-in is almost over (1038 miles so far).

I thought about cutting some pvc pipe inhalf length-wise and use it to direct the oil to the pan. It would be faster than removing the entire undertray. Besides.. white pvc plumbing pipe is cheap.

Oil Change
I did an oil change today and did have a little bit shoot out but it wasn't bad. I had the car on ramps so that might have made it easier. When I pulled the drain plug the glove I had on got covered with oil so that might have reduce the stream flow some.

I had a similar issue on my Subaru, so I just assumed that this one would do the same thing... and it did. In anticipation, I stuffed a couple of shop rags along the edge of the door opening. It was just enough to deflect the overshoot.

The filter is on the top drivers side of the engine compartment in front of the air filter box.

I used the oil change door to drain the oil and it worked fine for me. Thanks to an earlier thread, I had my oil pan a little bit towards the passenger side to catch the stream shooting out the side, but it definitely didn't go as far as hitting the side of the panel.

Update: I'm getting close to my next oil change (at 5k miles) and I still plan on rigging up some sort of oil deflector plate. FWIW, I'll take some pics. I believe some of you guys didn't have as much of a problem because your oil wasn't as hot as mine.

I read the previous thread and used the access door to the drain plug area as my deflector plate. I just wedged it in the opening appropriately and it worked great. Just wiped it off afterwards and no spilled oil.
